During a recent episode of the Hauler Talk podcast, NASCAR’s vice president of racing communications, Mike Forde, addressed the organization’s response to the widely-discussed fight between drivers Carson Hocevar and Ryan Blaney. NASCAR has decided not to issue penalties to any drivers or crew involved in the skirmish; however, they intend to speak with Ty Gibbs, who was observed near the confrontation smiling and even throwing a nearly full water bottle into the fray. The bottle narrowly missed Hocevar and struck a phone held by a reporter.
Gibbs had been competing with Hocevar for the lead during the final restart before Joey Logano overtook them both. While the two shared a somewhat odd moment during the cool-down lap, it appears Gibbs’ water bottle toss was more playful than aggressive. Forde explained, “It was a heat-of-the-moment thing—he probably thought it was funny, maybe fueled by some frustration. But it could have been dangerous, so we plan to talk with him this weekend in Kansas, though no penalties will be handed down.”
Notably, this is not the first time a driver has thrown a water bottle during a heated Bristol incident. Back in 1995, after being spun out, Rusty Wallace threw a water bottle at Dale Earnhardt, hitting him and escalating their confrontation, which became so famous it even inspired a song—though no punches followed.
