Saturday night’s late model race at Martinsville Speedway ended in turmoil, with Caden Kvapil, brother of Carson Kvapil, capturing the coveted ValleyStar Credit Union 300 victory. This race, often compared to the Daytona 500 for late model stock cars, has a storied history dating back to 1970.
During the final lap, Kvapil battled for the lead in a three-wide shootout alongside Treyten Lapcevich and Corey Heim. As they entered Turn 1, Heim bumped into Lapcevich’s rear, causing Lapcevich to spin and allowing Kvapil to pull away and secure the win. Heim edged out Lapcevich for second place following more aggressive side-by-side contact throughout the lap.
Shortly after the finish, Heim and Lapcevich clashed again, with Heim even becoming airborne as he rode over Lapcevich’s car hood. Both vehicles were heavily damaged in this post-race incident.
Tensions boiled over inside the Martinsville infield near the iconic hot dog stand, where a confrontation erupted. Heim tried to retreat as members of Lapcevich’s Chad Bryant Racing team, including owner Chad Bryant, approached him aggressively. Despite Heim’s attempts to calm the situation, he was cornered and struck repeatedly before police stepped in to break up the altercation.
Interestingly, Heim had a previously positive relationship with Bryant, having driven for his team in ARCA events in the past. Before the fight among the crews, Lapcevich also sought out Heim on pit road, but Bryant intervened to prevent the conflict from escalating sooner.
Heim, who races full-time in the upcoming 2027 NASCAR Cup Series for 23XI Racing—co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin—had a strong part-time season that included wins at the Brickyard 400 and the inaugural San Diego Street Course. He is also the 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion.
The Martinsville event was not the only place where tempers flared, as another fight occurred earlier in the day involving drivers Brad Housewright and Chase Burrow. Additionally, just a week prior at Bristol, a notable on-track altercation saw Carson Hocevar punch Ryan Blaney twice.
