Highfield Investment Group Inc. has agreed to purchase the Racing Entertainment Centre operations of Century Casinos located in Edmonton and Calgary, thereby broadening its presence in the gaming, hospitality, and racing entertainment sectors. This deal does not cover Century Casinos’ other casino properties in Alberta.
Based in Alberta, Highfield is a diverse investment and development firm with almost five decades of experience adding long-term value across various fields such as real estate, hospitality, agriculture, property management, and energy services. The company also has over 20 years of specialized expertise in thoroughbred breeding, ownership, and horse racing activities in Western Canada.
This acquisition brings established assets in the horse racing entertainment industry, a sector that significantly impacts the provincial economy. A 2019 report highlighted that Alberta’s horse racing industry generated a total economic impact of $311.7 million, including $157.1 million in direct spending, and supported 1,506 full-time equivalent jobs throughout the province.
Adrian Munro, president of Highfield Investment Group, expressed confidence in the long-term prospects of these operations, emphasizing their alignment with the company’s experience in hospitality, operations, and horse racing. He stated that Highfield is making a major investment in Alberta, believing in the ongoing growth potential of the business and the lasting value it can deliver.
Munro also acknowledged Century Casinos’ important contribution to Alberta’s racing industry. “We appreciate Century Casinos’ substantial investment in the horse racing sector and the foundation they have built,” he remarked.
Leading Highfield’s strategic efforts and diverse operations, Munro serves as president of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. He works alongside Paul Ryneveld, vice president of Racing Entertainment Centres, who brings 38 years of experience in North American horse racing, track management, redevelopment, and regulatory affairs.
The completion of this transaction depends on standard closing conditions and receiving regulatory approvals.
