Joao Felix has expressed that he frequently thinks about a return to Europe to participate in the Champions League, although he currently feels content at Al-Nassr.
Since joining Al-Nassr last year, the Portugal forward has played a significant role in their success, contributing to their Saudi Pro League title with an impressive 33 goal involvements in just as many matches (20 goals and 13 assists).
Felix first emerged on the scene as one of European football’s most promising talents when he joined Benfica in the 2018-19 season. He made headlines with a remarkable €126 million transfer to Atletico Madrid at a young age but faced challenges in Spain.
Despite a stellar 20-goal debut season with Benfica, Felix has struggled to replicate that success in Europe’s top leagues, managing no more than 10 goals in a season during subsequent stints with Atletico, Chelsea, Barcelona, and AC Milan.
At 26, he has only one year left on his contract with Al-Nassr, where Ange Postecoglou has taken over as head coach after Jorge Jesus accepted the Portugal national team role.
Felix aims to assist Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching the milestone of 1,000 career goals, with the veteran needing just 21 more. However, he also has aspirations beyond this, setting his sights on a return to elite European competition.
In an interview with AS, he mentioned, “I want to improve – I’m very happy at Al-Nassr. This will be my second year, and I’ll be 27 at the end of the season. I do plan to return to Europe, though maybe not immediately.”
He continued, “I’m not sure if that’ll be at the end of this season or the next, but I want to play in the Champions League again and compete at that level. It’s always a unique experience to play in Europe, against the best teams in the world… it fuels your motivation. While I’m enjoying my time in Saudi Arabia, the idea of going back is on my mind. I can’t say if it’ll be next year, in two years, three, or four, but I want to compete in European tournaments once more.”
Currently, Al-Nassr sits in third place in the Pro League, having accumulated 16 points from their first seven matches of the 2026-27 season, two points behind leaders Al-Hilal.
Felix is also representing Portugal on the international stage, where they have won their first two games under former Al-Nassr coach Jorge Jesus, and they are set to face Denmark in the Nations League next. He scored in the recent 2-1 victory over Norway, bringing his total to five goals in his last 10 appearances for the national team.
Fan Take:
This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it hints at the potential return of a talented young player to Europe’s top tier, which could elevate the level of competition and excitement in the Champions League. For fans, Felix is a player to watch closely, as his journey back to Europe could have a profound impact on both his career and the clubs he represents.
