NASCAR has responded decisively following a heated clash at Martinsville Speedway involving rising star Corey Heim, the latest addition to 23XI Racing. Co-owner Denny Hamlin, who partners with NBA legend Michael Jordan on the team, urged NASCAR to take firm action against those responsible for the one-sided brawl.
The conflict began after Heim had contact with Treyten Lapcevich near the conclusion of the ValleyStar Credit Union 300, a major late model event within NASCAR Regional. After the race ended, members of Lapcevich’s Chad Bryant Racing (CBR) team confronted Heim, with Chad Bryant himself taking part in physically assaulting Heim. Standing near the track’s food stand, Heim was repeatedly struck and punched but did not retaliate.
In response, NASCAR indefinitely suspended team owner Chad Bryant and CBR crew member Steven Civitarese for their roles in the attack. Bryant was fined $2,000, and Civitarese received a $1,000 fine; both were placed on probation for one year. Additionally, they are barred from participating in the 2027 ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville. Bryant must also complete mandated anger management training through a NASCAR-approved program before any possibility of reinstatement.
Furthermore, NASCAR penalized Ryden Lapcevich—brother of Treyten, who had driven the CBR vehicle but was uninvolved in the fight—with a $500 fine and probation through the 2027 season.
The disciplinary actions extended beyond the Heim incident. A separate altercation after heat races between drivers Brad Houseright and Chad Burrow resulted in one driver being injured and bloodied. Both Houseright and Burrow were fined $250 and placed on probation until the end of 2027. Crew members Ryan Burrow and Dylan Jenks, affiliated with Burrow, were fined $500 each and also placed on probation. Unlike the situation involving Heim, no suspensions were handed out for this second fight.
Overall, seven individuals faced fines and two were suspended stemming from these two incidents. On his podcast, Actions Detrimental, Denny Hamlin condemned the Chad Bryant Racing members who ambushed Heim, calling them “f** cowards” for isolating and attacking NASCAR’s newest Brickyard 400 champion.
Fan Take: This strong response from NASCAR highlights the sport’s commitment to maintaining respect and safety among competitors and teams. For fans, it reinforces the importance of sportsmanship while signaling that NASCAR will not tolerate off-track violence, preserving the integrity of the sport’s exciting but competitive nature.
