Over the past decade, the Vegas Golden Knights have hosted a mix of highly skilled players—including goal scorers, top-tier playmakers, and future Hall of Fame goaltenders. However, one thing they hadn’t experienced much of was the emergence of talented rookies.
That has now changed.
Prior to this season, only one player in the franchise’s history had scored a goal in his first NHL game—Cody Glass, the organization’s very first draft pick. But on the opening night of the 2026-27 season, the Golden Knights witnessed a new milestone as young star Trevor Connelly scored his first NHL goal.
Last year, Connelly made a notable impact in the AHL at just 19 years old, helping the Henderson Silver Knights reach the postseason for the first time in four years. He played a significant role in their success, netting 14 goals and totaling 49 points over 46 games during the regular season, and adding a goal and six points in six playoff outings.
“Trevor stands out from anyone else in our organization,” said GM Kelly McCrimmon at the start of training camp. “He exhibits exceptional hockey sense, incredible talent. What he achieved last year in the AHL as a 19-year-old suggests his potential is extremely high.”
Connelly’s first training camp was delayed by injuries, but the organization saw enough in him to give him a spot on the roster. He participated in three preseason games, and although he didn’t record points, his composed style and mature play impressed coaches.
“Trevor played his game,” stated head coach Ryan Craig after camp. “We wanted to see if he could keep pace, handle the details of the game without the puck, and contribute defensively. He proved himself, and now he has a shot to prove it in the regular season.”
The club’s confidence in Connelly was justified when, just over 15 minutes into the season opener, he scored his first NHL goal. It was a spectacular play—shuffling in front of the net, batting down Brayden McNabb’s shot, then slipping the puck past the goalie Spencer Knight.
“Living the dream—I’m beyond happy,” Connelly said after making the roster.
Fan Take: It’s exciting to see a young player like Trevor Connelly making an immediate impact at the NHL level—this signals a bright future for the Golden Knights and injects fresh energy into the league. Moments like these remind hockey fans why the sport’s blend of skill and youthful talent continues to keep the game exhilarating and unpredictable.
