EK Prosper and Grayson Waller delivered a compelling main event for the NXT Championship, particularly impressive given that Waller’s original opponent, Mason Rook, was only recently confirmed unavailable due to medical reasons. The match, along with the chaotic scramble of wrestlers rushing from the locker room to the ring, made for an entertaining and refreshing finale to NXT after a streak of disappointing and somber episodes.
When Robert Stone announced that Waller’s title defense would be an open challenge following Rook’s medical disqualification, I expected a single challenger to step forward. Instead, a wave of wrestlers flooded the ring, resembling a reverse battle royal. Nearly making it there were Zilla Fatu and Cruz Montana, hinting that these two might soon compete to become the number one contender for Halloween Havoc, rather than pursuing their current storylines against BirthRight and Dion Lennox, respectively.
Amid their fight, Prosper sneaked up behind Waller. Prosper is an excellent wrestler who consistently performs as if he has something to prove. Despite often being overshadowed, partly due to his involvement in the tag team and now-defunct Speed Championship scenes this year, Prosper’s participation in the six-man tag match for a number one contender spot suggested this moment was coming. Though it’s unfortunate that Rook might be sidelined for some time, Prosper’s opportunity to shine was a welcome development.
Waller and Prosper were given plenty of ring time, even when considering that this match was likely arranged on short notice. I found the bout much more enjoyable than I initially anticipated. The audience was energized by Prosper’s close pin attempt early on, then quieted down before he rallied their support once again with strong in-ring performances.
Near the match’s end, Prosper executed a stunning springboard moonsault onto Waller, who was positioned on the commentary table—an impressive visual highlight. He followed up with another near-fall inside the ring before Waller managed to reach the ropes. Ultimately, Prosper absorbed two rolling stunners, allowing Waller to retain the title. While the outcome was unsurprising, Prosper’s showing was excellent, making it a strong night for both competitors and marking Waller’s first successful title defense in a clean, well-received contest.
