Max Verstappen and Formula 1 have returned to the Sepang International Circuit for the first time since his victory there in 2017. This weekend marks the Bahrain Grand Prix’s visit to Malaysia, where the Dutch driver quickly put in a strong performance by leading the times in Free Practice 1 for Red Bull.
Despite this promising start, Verstappen, like many others, encountered challenges due to the heavy tire degradation caused by the track’s conditions—an issue he will need to manage carefully. Reflecting on Friday’s practice, Verstappen said, “I think we had a decent start, but it’s tricky. The track is really hot, so there’s a lot of degradation, with many things to figure out, but overall, it’s been positive.”
In the second practice session, the four-time world champion ended in fourth place and was unable to better his earlier time. However, this could be attributed to a different running program he followed, leaving him uncertain if any real progress was made between the two sessions. Verstappen commented, “Progress is difficult. It was warmer again in FP2, and I ran a different program. So, hard to say if there was progress, but there is still plenty to analyze and understand.”
Notably, Verstappen chose not to use soft tires during Free Practice 2. Instead, he and the Red Bull team ran exclusively on medium tires after using two sets of softs in the opening session. When asked about this strategy, the 29-year-old explained it was intentional, considering the possibility of rain later in the day. He said, “I wanted to do a long run in case some rain was coming.”
Verstappen will have one final opportunity on Saturday to refine his setup before the vital qualifying session, with the weather expected to remain dry during Free Practice 3.
Fan Take: This development is significant for racing enthusiasts because it shows Verstappen’s adaptability and strategic thinking, key factors that can influence race outcomes. Managing tire degradation and weather uncertainties at Sepang could make for an exciting and unpredictable weekend, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
