Another day brings another example of disrespect!
In a recent interview, Bub Carrington disclosed that the Wizards deliberately held back in order to try and draft AJ Dybantsa last season. You can view the exchange below.
This kind of move should normally result in a fine, right? After all, that’s exactly what happened with the Utah Jazz. However, according to Sam Amick, the Wizards won’t be penalized.
This kind of disrespect isn’t new — remember when the Jazz wanted Keyonte George to have an opportunity to coach during the summer league? It would have been a great way to connect him with the young roster and bring some excitement. But the NBA blocked the Jazz from doing so.
Was Adam Silver consistent in this decision? Actually, no. Just days later, he allowed the Celtics to do the very same thing.
So it’s acceptable for the Celtics but not the Jazz? That’s incredibly disrespectful!
The silver lining is that it clearly bothered the NBA that the Jazz were trying to do the right thing by tanking to build a championship team. The Jazz winning the lottery after their fine is ironic. It would be even more amusing if Utah went on to win an NBA championship because of that tanking strategy. That $500,000 fine might just be the smartest investment Ryan Smith has made.
Fan Take: This situation highlights ongoing inconsistencies in how the NBA enforces its rules, which frustrates fans who want a fair and transparent league. If teams feel unfairly treated, it could impact the sport’s competitive balance and fan trust in the years to come.
