The AEW World Championship will be contested in an eight-man Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream, scheduled for Saturday, October 17, in Orlando. Tony Schiavone revealed the match during Saturday’s Collision broadcast, and AEW later shared the match rules on its social media channels. This concept originated from a discussion between AEW President Tony Khan and the reigning AEW World Champion, Will Ospreay.
Schiavone explained, “Tony Khan approached Will Ospreay, acknowledging how he has fulfilled countless fan dreams worldwide and asked what his ultimate dream match would be if he remained champion going into WrestleDream.” Ospreay reflected on his past experiences, particularly with one of Tony Khan’s innovative AEW formats—the Casino Gauntlet Match. Having won the first two AEW Casino Gauntlet matches, Ospreay collaborated with Khan to devise this distinctive match type. The Clockwork Carnage match debuted recently in London within Pro Wrestling EVE, the British promotion where Ospreay serves as creative lead.
Here’s how the Clockwork Carnage match operates:
- The match features eight competitors and unfolds in two phases.
- Initially, two wrestlers enter the ring at random. A new wrestler joins every three minutes until all eight participants are present.
- During these entry intervals, any wrestler who is pinned or submits is eliminated, so the number of active competitors could be fewer than eight by the time the last entrant arrives.
- After the eighth wrestler enters, the remaining competitors enter a 15-minute scoring phase where each pinfall or submission counts as one point, and multiple points can be earned by a single wrestler.
- Once the 15 minutes conclude, the wrestler with the highest score wins the match and claims the championship.
AEW’s version extends the entry interval to three minutes, a change from EVE’s original two-minute interval.
So far, Will Ospreay is the only confirmed participant. The other seven spots will be determined via qualifying bouts, the first taking place October 6 at Grand Slam France in Paris, where Samoa Joe faces Jack Perry. Ospreay is also set to defend his title against Kazuchika Okada in Paris; should Okada win, he would enter the Clockwork Carnage match as champion.
The WrestleDream lineup announced so far includes:
- Clockwork Carnage Match for the AEW World Championship: Will Ospreay (c) vs. seven challengers to be decided
- Mercedes Moné (c) defending the AEW Women’s World Championship against Thekla
- The Young Bucks (c) defending the AEW World Tag Team Championship against Kevin Knight and Kyle Fletcher
Mercedes Moné won the women’s title from Willow Nightingale at All In: London on August 30. Thekla earned her title shot by defeating Nightingale at All Out on September 26. Moné has not competed since All In due to a broken nose sustained in that match. Before WrestleDream, Ospreay and Moné will defend their titles at Grand Slam France—Ospreay against Okada and Moné against Queen Aminata—so titles could change hands prior to the event.
WrestleDream will be held at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, marking the event’s Florida debut and AEW’s second pay-per-view at this venue after Worlds End in December 2024. The Zero Hour pre-show will kick off at 7 p.m. ET, followed by the main card at 8 p.m. ET on PPV and HBO Max. Tickets are available for purchase on AEW’s official website and Ticketmaster.
Fan Take: This innovative Clockwork Carnage match format adds a fresh, strategic twist to championship wrestling, blending endurance and quick thinking under pressure. For fighting fans, it promises unpredictability and excitement, potentially setting a new standard for multi-competitor championship bouts in professional wrestling.
