The San Jose Sharks secured their second consecutive victory to kick off the season with a 5-4 overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings. Igor Chernyshov scored his second goal of the game with only 1:42 left in overtime, sealing the win for San Jose. The Kings fought back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to tie the game and dominated much of the extra period. However, Chernyshov’s decisive shot came off a pass from Macklin Celebrini, who has impressively contributed five assists in just two games.
The Sharks, after suffering five straight games without a win in previous seasons, have now started this season with two overtime victories, including an opening win over Florida. Along with Chernyshov’s goals, Tyler Toffoli, Kiefer Sherwood, and Nolan Allan also scored for San Jose. Goalie Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves to help secure the win.
For Los Angeles, goals by Adrian Kempe, Quinton Byfield, Erik Haula, and Artemi Panarin kept the game close, but their team remains winless after two games. Anton Forsberg made 20 saves in the net.
Chernyshov’s goal early in the third period gave San Jose a 4-2 lead, but the Kings responded quickly. Haula’s goal cut the deficit, and Panarin’s goal with just over five minutes remaining tied the game after a miscued clear by Allan. The Kings took the lead first in the game with Kempe’s power-play goal in the first period, assisted by Panarin. The Sharks countered strongly with three second-period goals, first from Toffoli, who finished a setup from rookie Ivar Stenberg—who earned his first career point—and later with a late-period goal by Byfield on a power play.
Looking ahead, the Kings will host Florida on Tuesday, while the Sharks will travel to Dallas on Monday.
Fan Take: This game highlights the exciting unpredictability of hockey, where comebacks and late-game heroics keep fans on the edge of their seats. Early-season wins like these can set the tone and boost confidence, making the Sharks a team to watch this year.
