Following London City Lionesses’ impressive 6-1 victory over Tottenham in the Women’s Super League, head coach Eder Maestre suggested that this outcome could significantly influence his team’s trajectory.
Captain Alexia Putellas and French international Kadidiatou Diani each netted two goals, while Danielle van de Donk and Delphine Cascarino also contributed to the scoreline for the visitors at Brisbane Road.
By half-time, Maestre’s squad had established a 3-0 lead, with Putellas scoring in the third and 34th minutes, following up her first WSL goal in a 2-0 win against Brighton the previous week.
Putellas has been in remarkable form, with 49 goal contributions in her last 50 appearances across club and international matches, having scored 28 times and provided 21 assists for London City, Barcelona, and Spain.
With 12 points accrued from five WSL games, Maestre believes the emphatic nature of this latest victory will invigorate the entire club.
“While the three points are equivalent to any other match, a win like this can be transformative, demonstrating our commitment,” Maestre remarked.
“However, we must remain grounded. The teams accustomed to being at the top are still there.”
“I’m thrilled we’re meeting our goals. With such talent, it’s about developing chemistry, which takes time. We are in the process of building something solid.”

Tottenham had started the 2026-27 season without a loss in their first four matches, accumulating 10 points, but manager Martin Ho admitted their performance fell short.
“It was a poor showing, unacceptable as a team. We didn’t win initial or second balls and were lackluster in duels. We need to learn from this,” Ho stated.
“The team needs to take responsibility, starting with me. We simply didn’t perform, and that’s not the standard we expect. Conceding six goals is never acceptable.”
In other matches on Sunday, Brighton also enjoyed a dominant 5-1 win over winless Charlton Athletic, while Chelsea secured a straightforward 3-0 victory against West Ham, with Melvine Malard scoring first, followed by late goals from Kiera Walsh and Maika Hamano.
Everton triumphed over Birmingham City 2-1, and Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace.
Fan Take: This victory not only strengthens London City Lionesses’ position in the league but also highlights the rising competitiveness of women’s soccer. As teams like London City showcase their potential, it could draw more attention and investment into the women’s game, benefiting players and fans alike.
