DETROIT – Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks quickly embraced his notorious reputation during Phoenix’s preseason opener against the Detroit Pistons on Monday, October 5, at Little Caesars Arena. With 7:23 remaining in the first quarter, Brooks was assessed a technical foul.
Brooks, who led the NBA last season with 17 technical fouls, was closely guarding Pistons forward John Collins inside the paint using his typical aggressive style. He used his forearm to make contact with Collins, who reacted by raising his hands as if to say, “Did you see that?” Later in the same play, Collins secured an offensive rebound over Brooks. In response, Brooks reached around him from behind, increasing physical contact. Collins then turned to face Brooks and placed the ball in his face.
Officials and security stepped in to separate the players. Initially, both were handed double technical fouls, but after reviewing the situation, Collins was called for a flagrant one foul. Brooks took two free throws and made one of them.
Brooks is currently in his second year with the Suns, while Collins is a newcomer to the Pistons. By halftime, the Suns led 68-50.
