Gian Piero Gasperini is eager for Roma to “pick up right where we left off” in Serie A following the international break.
Roma had a remarkable beginning to the 2026-27 season, currently leading the table ahead of the defending champions Inter based on goal difference.
This marks the first time since the 2014-15 season that Roma has gone unbeaten in their first five league matches, achieving five wins.
While Gasperini has been cautious about declaring Roma as title contenders, their performance before the break was impressive.
The team ranks as the second-highest scorers with 14 goals, just behind Inter, and boasts one of the top defensive records, having conceded only three goals (Cagliari has allowed two).
“We had a limited number of players and were unable to play any friendlies, so we focused on sustaining the momentum from our initial training week, followed by a break,” Gasperini explained to Sky Sport Italia.
“Monday is our final day off, and after that, we will return to the mindset of the league, which we enjoyed during a strong phase of results and performances. We aim to continue from where we left off.”
“There were several small factors at play, starting with the fact that I took over a group that was ready to respond from the very first training session.”
“The team finished last season well, and the players quickly showed their openness to exploring new strategies and styles of play.”
“I also received support from the club. They valued me, even though I came in as a competitor at first, and there was some initial skepticism. Earning the fans’ support has been a personal triumph for me, and I’m genuinely thankful.”

Gasperini (299) is on the verge of his 300th Serie A match as a manager.
Only four coaches have achieved this milestone in the league: Giovanni Trapattoni (352), Massimiliano Allegri (324), Luciano Spalletti (305), and Nereo Rocco (302).
He could reach this landmark against Como when his team resumes play on October 11, and Como has also been in solid form, having lost just one of their five league games (W3 D1).
“Anyone who follows football can see how well their team has progressed, the caliber of players they possess, and the quality of their matches,” Gasperini commented regarding Como.
“Inter remains the strongest regarding squad depth and results, but Como can certainly be competitive alongside the top teams.”
“I’ve heard Fabregas mention that he uses Subbuteo to demonstrate attacking strategies. I need to use it to figure out how to counter his tactics.”
Gasperini is also gearing up for the return of Roma’s former coach, Jose Mourinho, who will lead Real Madrid to Stadio Olimpico for a Champions League match next week.
Mourinho guided Roma to victory in the inaugural Conference League in May 2022, defeating Feyenoord 1-0 in the final.
“Jose is, rightly so, a special individual who consistently manages to achieve success both on and off the pitch,” Gasperini stated regarding Mourinho.
“He won the Conference League and reached a Europa League final with Roma. While his league performance may have been lacking, he’s still appreciated by most fans, which shows he has something unique.”
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans because it highlights Roma’s resurgence, creating excitement around a competitive Serie A title race. Gasperini’s approach and the looming encounter with Mourinho add layers of intrigue, promising thrilling matches ahead and possibly igniting rivalries in the league.
