Michael Morales has once again issued a challenge to the UFC welterweight division. The undefeated fighter, who last competed at UFC 322 in 2025, is anticipated to make his return to the octagon in January of next year.
Morales has accused Carlos Prates and Ian Machado Garry of avoiding a fight with him. Consequently, he plans to face the unbeaten Kazakh rising star Shavkat Rakhmonov. The Ecuadorian athlete also targeted champion Islam Makhachev, top contender Prates, and former title challenger Garry with a bold message, stating:
“Islam… you know who I am. You said ‘Morales is way more dangerous.’ You also mentioned I need one more fight. Regarding Prates and me, you said ‘let them fight.’ Fine, but after that, no more excuses. Prates, you claimed the UFC never offered you the fight with me. Let’s make it happen. You want the belt, I want the belt. Let’s see who’s next.”
He continued, “If you have different plans… Islam, if you prefer Prates because you want an easier opponent, I have my own plan for 2027: the final boss of this division, Shavkat Rakhmonov. Oh, and by the way — forget Ian Garry.”

Morales views Rakhmonov as a formidable challenge. The 31-year-old, however, has been out of competition for nearly two years due to consecutive injuries. Earlier this year, Rakhmonov’s comeback was delayed because of a recurring knee injury, which led to him dropping out of the rankings. He had knee surgery a few months ago and has since resumed training.
Meanwhile, Sean Brady is doubtful that Rakhmonov will fight again. Despite rumors of a possible Rakhmonov vs. Morales matchup later this year, Brady believes the Kazakh fighter is unlikely to return to the cage.

Rakhmonov’s recurring knee issues have sparked concern among fans regarding his fighting future. It remains to be seen if he can successfully return after proper rehab and recovery.
Fan Take: This showdown announcement reignites excitement by potentially setting up one of the toughest fights in the UFC welterweight division. Morales stepping up to face Rakhmonov could reshape the landscape, offering fans a highly anticipated clash that tests the resilience and skill of two undefeated fighters.
