Head coach Jesper Sorensen of the Vancouver Whitecaps believes the team needs to move away from their recent “coin toss” style of play, which he describes as chaotic. Despite currently holding the top spot in the MLS Western Conference, Vancouver played to a 3-3 draw against D.C. United in their last match.
The Whitecaps managed to come back from behind to take the lead, but D.C. equalized multiple times, with Thomas Muller giving Vancouver a brief advantage before they conceded again in the 80th minute. As a result, Sorensen’s squad has only emerged victorious in two of their past five league games.
Looking ahead to their match against the Chicago Fire on Tuesday, Sorensen is calling for a return to a more structured, disciplined game. “We will have some absences, and they will too,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of sticking to their game plan.
“I hope we can play in a more cohesive manner and avoid a game that’s too erratic. We need to regain control and reduce the unpredictability that characterized our recent form,” he said. Notably, they conceded ten corners last match, which is not a typical occurrence for them, and Sorensen stressed the necessity of moving past such erratic performances.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Chicago Fire – Johan Gomez
Gomez scored the only goal in Chicago’s victory against Charlotte FC on September 26.
This was the first regular-season goal by a Fire player not named Robert Lewandowski or Maren Haile-Selassie since August 19, following a streak where the duo accounted for their last nine league goals (excluding own goals).
Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White
White has netted seven goals in his last seven appearances in MLS, scoring in each of his last four matches. This marks the fifth occasion he has scored in four consecutive league games for the Whitecaps, a feat he previously accomplished in a club-record five-match streak in 2025, originally set by Camilo Sanvezzo in 2013.
MATCH PREDICTION: DRAW
The Whitecaps have secured victories in their last three regular-season away games without allowing a single goal, marking the first occurrence of three consecutive shutout wins on the road for Vancouver. Historically, only the LA Galaxy in 2010 and D.C. in 2007 have achieved four straight road shutout wins in a single MLS season.
The Fire recently broke a seven-match winless streak in all competitions with a 1-0 win against Charlotte FC but have not won at home in their last three matches (D1 L2), despite enjoying a strong record in their previous 12 at home (W9 D0 L3).
Since 2020, Chicago and Vancouver have traded wins in their meetings, with the Fire winning the last encounter 3-1 in March 2025. The only instance of consecutive wins between the teams came in 2015 and 2016, when the Whitecaps won both matches.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Chicago Fire – 38.9%
Draw – 23.4%
Vancouver Whitecaps – 37.7%
Fan Take: This news is critical for soccer fans as it highlights the tactical evolution needed for teams to succeed in a competitive league. A return to a more structured play style could be pivotal for the Whitecaps, potentially influencing their performance in critical matchups moving forward.
