Details regarding the timing of the highly anticipated heavyweight boxing match between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have been disclosed. This major event, considered one of the most significant in British boxing history, is scheduled to occur at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on 11 December.
According to an application submitted to Cardiff Council, the fighters’ ring walk is expected to begin around 01:00 GMT, following a brief live music act, with the stadium remaining open until 03:30. Although the venue was confirmed back in September, the necessary changes to its premises license to permit an event in the early hours have not yet been finalized.
The application was submitted after months of uncertainty about the fight—over a decade in the making—finally being confirmed. Millennium Stadium Plc has requested a one-time extension to the stadium’s operating hours from the council to allow the bout to proceed at this unusual time.
Specifically, the application asks to extend the permitted hours for boxing and wrestling entertainment from the current 01:00 cutoff to 03:00 on 12 December, to accommodate the Joshua vs. Fury fight, with the ring walk commencing at 01:00. The request also includes extending live music until 03:00, featuring a brief live performance just before the fighters enter the ring, as well as prolonging allowed times for recorded music, late-night food sales, and alcohol service until 03:00, with the stadium closing at 03:30.
The applicants assured that the stadium’s roof would remain closed throughout the event and that enhanced security and stewarding measures would be in place. For the license variation to be approved, a public notice must be displayed for 28 consecutive days, allowing time for either objections or support comments until 3 November.
If no objections arise, the council is obligated to approve the application. Should there be any opposition, a council hearing will be held, which could lead to modifications or even refusal of the license changes.
Since the fight was officially announced on 24 September, Cardiff Council leader Chris Weaver highlighted its potential to bring substantial economic benefits to the city by attracting visitors from across the UK and internationally. He emphasized how major events boost local businesses, support employment, and place Cardiff on the global stage.
Local business owners have echoed this sentiment, predicting a significant economic lift for Wales as fans from around the world are expected to attend the long-awaited clash.
Fan Take: This fight is monumental not just for its star power but for what it represents in British heavyweight boxing—an epic showdown years in the making. For fans, the timing and scale of the event showcase boxing’s enduring ability to captivate global audiences and push the sport to new heights.
