Jockey Adrian Escobedo has become a graded stakes winner and is headed to the Breeders’ Cup after guiding Domain Expansion to victory in the G2 Oak Leaf Stakes, a success partly fueled by some Michelob Ultras. Escobedo’s friendly nature was evident last July at the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund’s West Coast Jockey Karaoke event, where he generously offered to buy a round of beers for California Racing Partners’ Matt Dohman and Larry Zapp.
Escobedo, 39, was no stranger to performing. Prior to starting his riding career in 2021, he worked in construction and sang in a banda group that played at weddings, quinceañeras, and even Turf Paradise—the very track where he won his first race in November 2021. He also won the 2023 Jockey Karaoke competition with his rendition of “La Bamba.”
Escobedo’s kindness at the 2026 event made a strong impression on Dohman. “That was such a great gesture,” Dohman, from Huntington Beach, California, said. “I wanted to reward his friendliness by giving him a mount on a horse.”
Dohman grew up attending Southern California racetracks regularly with his father and entered racehorse ownership in 2012, quickly finding success when Unstopper Topper won an allowance optional claiming race at Hollywood Park in just his second start for Dohman’s Drenk and Dohman Racing Stables. Dohman humorously recalled how after that early win, his horse finished last in its next race.
Over time, Dohman’s involvement expanded. He raced with his own Heart Racing Stable before co-founding California Racing Partners in 2021 and now serves on the board of the Thoroughbred Owners of California. “We try our best to support California racing,” Dohman explained.
After careful evaluation, Dohman selected Domain Expansion, a Speaker’s Corner filly trained by Leonard Powell, as a promising contender. This $130,000 yearling purchase, co-owned with Ciaglia Racing LLC, Allen R. Keith, and Kevin O’Donnell, impressed with her balanced build and smooth movement—key traits they value in a stakes-caliber horse.
Although Escobedo often rides horses for trainer Ryan Hanson, a close friend of Dohman, Dohman wanted to give Escobedo a chance with a different barn. Domain Expansion debuted on September 5 in a one-mile turf race at Del Mar, where she was still “a little green” and not fully fit, yet rallied to finish a close second under Escobedo.
Powell also noticed her talent during morning workouts. “She’s very talented,” Powell said after the Oak Leaf, noting early breezes revealed qualities uncommon in typical 2-year-olds, with more potential still to come.
Instead of entering Domain Expansion in another maiden race, the team aimed for the Breeders’ Cup, considering both the G3 Surfer Girl Stakes on turf and the Oak Leaf on dirt at Santa Anita. Escobedo was ready to ride her in either race, even joking with Hanson that he’d choose Domain Expansion over Hanson’s horse.
Ultimately, they gambled on the Oak Leaf on October 3, despite uncertainties about how she would perform on the main track and the challenges of a mile and a sixteenth in 102-degree heat. Domain Expansion started from post 3 of 6, positioned herself behind the leaders, then surged ahead to win by seven lengths.
This marked Escobedo’s first graded stakes victory and the third for California Racing Partners, just months after the chance encounter at Jockey Karaoke. Reflecting on the win, Escobedo said, “It feels amazing. She felt great, just like the first time I rode her. This filly is just getting started, and hopefully, we can go far with her.”
Domain Expansion is resting well after the triumph, with plans to train at Santa Anita before shipping to Keeneland ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Dohman expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming challenge: “We’re going to ride her in the Breeders’ Cup, as long as she stays healthy. I like the story of giving someone an opportunity who might not have had one otherwise.”
