Kasey Kahne was dissatisfied with how his full-time NASCAR career concluded, and now, nearly a decade after stepping away, he hopes to end on a positive note. At 46 years old, Kahne is set to return to full-time competition in NASCAR’s Truck Series in 2027, driving the No. 77 for Spire Motorsports.
His final full-time Cup season abruptly ended in September 2018 due to his body struggling to endure the physical strain and recovery demands of weekly races. In August, Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson approached Kahne during the Knoxville Nationals sprint-car event with the offer to join the team full-time, which Kahne eagerly accepted. Since leaving NASCAR’s top tier, he has been racing sprint cars.
Kahne expressed excitement about the opportunity, saying, “To get a chance to run a truck with a successful team, I felt I couldn’t pass this up.” Although his recent truck stats are impressive—with five wins in six starts—he recognizes his upcoming challenge since he last raced a truck in 2015 and only participated in one O’Reilly Series race in 2025 at Rockingham. Kahne emphasized his desire to enjoy the experience but also to remain competitive, stating, “I love the competition and want to win each time I’m on the track.”
Next season, he plans to balance about as many sprint-car races as truck races, with the Truck Series schedule featuring 25 events. This return allows Kahne to close his NASCAR career on his own terms after earning 18 Cup wins over 15 years. Reflecting on his initial retirement, he said his body was “just giving up” on handling the rigorous Cup schedule, which left him frustrated with how his career ended.
Currently signed for one season, Kahne is focused on the 2027 campaign. Much has changed since his last full-time stint—such as greater reliance on simulators—and he found adjusting to pit road during his recent Rockingham race to be a key challenge. He is enthusiastic about competing again, acknowledging the strong teams and drivers in the Truck Series, and looks forward to seeing how he measures up while enjoying the ride.
Fan Take:
Kahne’s full-time return is a thrilling development for NASCAR fans, offering a beloved driver a chance to rewrite his career narrative. His comeback not only adds excitement to the Truck Series but also highlights the sport’s ability to welcome veterans back, enriching competition and inspiring future talent.
