Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that he plans to have “one or more farewell matches,” confirming that he will continue his international career with Portugal despite a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus.
Last week, Ronaldo announced his departure from Portugal’s Nations League squad prior to their 4-2 victory over Denmark, and he mentioned that he would soon clarify the reasons behind his decision.
The 41-year-old played in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales but was substituted in the 67th minute and did not play in the 2-1 victory over Norway.
In a detailed message shared on social media, Ronaldo expressed frustration, stating that Jesus had “broken his word” regarding his playing time against Stale Solbakken’s team.
Although he has since apologized and stated he would accept any consequences, Ronaldo affirmed that he is not ready to retire from his national team career.
“I chose to leave the camp rather than wait for further broken promises,” his statement stated.
“To me, honesty is crucial in relationships. Even if it hurts, the truth must be spoken.”
“Throughout my nearly 25-year career, I’ve never interfered with a coach’s decisions. I uphold their strategies, but when promises are not kept, I believe my place is not there.”
“I sincerely apologize to my teammates for leaving the camp. Despite the broken trust, I take full responsibility for my actions.”

“I have heard talk about having a dignified farewell and that the Federation would like to give me that opportunity.”
“From my life experiences, I recognize that nothing is given for free. I can assure all my supporters, especially the Portuguese, that we will have farewell matches; there will be a time for that.”
“Provided I am physically fit and performing well for my club, and after serving any suspension that may be imposed, I will be ready to compete and win for our national team. This, I promise you, is the absolute truth.”
Ronaldo holds the record for the most international goals by a male player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, and has participated in six World Cups, making him one of only two players to achieve that feat.
However, since early 2025, Portugal has only lost 20% of their matches without Ronaldo, winning 80% compared to just 59% when he has been on the field, with the team scoring almost twice as many goals per game without him (3.4) than with him (1.9).
Coach Jesus has left the possibility open for Ronaldo’s return to the national squad, with Portugal’s next match against Denmark scheduled for November 14. The team has already secured advancement to the next stage of the Nations League, having earned 12 points from their first four Group A4 matches.
Incorporating Ronaldo’s future farewell matches highlights his enormous impact on the sport and the emotional connection fans have with him. For soccer enthusiasts, this news signifies not just the potential end of a legendary era but also sparks discussions about the future direction of the Portuguese national team.
