Southampton’s head coach, Tonda Eckert, was banned for six weeks and fined approximately $37,000 on Wednesday after being found guilty of spying on rival teams during the previous season. However, this suspension is deferred until the end of the 2027-28 season, meaning it will only take effect if he commits further infractions during that time frame.
The FA determined that Eckert had breached rule E3.1 three times between December 2025 and May of this year. Specific incidents included directing a staff member to observe Oxford United’s training ahead of a match last December, obtaining CCTV footage from an April Ipswich Town training session, and most critically, asking a staff member to monitor a Middlesbrough training session in May to check on injured midfielder Hayden Hackney, now with Everton.
This spying incident at Middlesbrough’s Rockliffe Park, which occurred during the Championship’s promotion playoffs, prompted Boro to report Southampton to the EFL, resulting in multiple penalties for the Saints. They were removed from the Championship playoffs and instead, Boro took their spot in the final, eventually losing to Hull City. Following these events, Southampton started the current season with a four-point deduction and currently sits in 13th place with 10 points after eight games; without the deduction, they would be competing in the top eight.
The FA did not find Eckert guilty of intentional cheating, coercing junior staff, or establishing a systematic spying operation. Furthermore, the FA recognized his willingness to cooperate throughout the investigation, where he admitted wrongdoing. He has publicly apologized, seeking forgiveness as recently as last month in a BBC interview.
In a statement, Southampton expressed hope that this incident would mark an end to a regrettable chapter in the club’s history, assuring fans that steps have been taken to prevent similar mistakes in the future.
Southampton will be back on the pitch Sunday to face Portsmouth, who are currently sitting two points behind them in 19th place.
