LAS VEGAS – Salhahuddin Everett, a Las Vegas native, went from working as a UFC security guard and runner to securing a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, marking a career-defining night at the revamped META Apex.
“I felt like I was living a dream from the moment this fight was announced,” said the undefeated welterweight Everett during the post-fight press conference.
On episode 9, season 10 of the Contender Series, Everett (5-0) delivered a stunning knockout victory over Ozzy Martin (4-1) with just 1:57 left in the first round, securing one of four UFC contracts awarded by Dana White.
“He’s one of the greatest kids ever, and it couldn’t happen to a better person. I’m really happy for him,” UFC President Dana White remarked.
Only three years earlier, Everett was working security at the UFC Apex, with the thought of becoming a UFC fighter seeming distant. Nevertheless, he persevered, climbing the ranks in local MMA circuits and earning quick finishes in promotions such as Tuff-N-Uff.
“I want to stay very active. I’m here to have a good time and I’m a fan of the welterweight division, so I plan to build my record by fighting everyone in that weight class,” Everett explained.
His chance to fight in the UFC came unexpectedly during his job as a runner. While restocking Dana White’s refrigerator, Everett was asked by White if UFC matchmakers Hunter Campbell and Sean Shelby had contacted him. When Everett said no, White revealed, “Because I want to see you on the Contender Series.” This moment was even featured in the promotional package aired before Everett’s fight.
“I was practically giddy. My boss Nicole and I were dancing behind Dana’s back the moment he said that. It was surreal, like pinching myself and living a dream,” Everett shared.
Everett’s supporters were loud and proud inside the META Apex, impressing both Dana White and veteran UFC media members. White noted during the post-fight press conference that some UFC Fight Nights don’t even reach that level of energy. Fighters like Jahmahal Hill and Sean Sharaf were seen celebrating Everett’s win from cageside. After the knockout, Dana White reportedly left his seat to avoid being on camera while celebrating.
Training out of Freestyle MMA Las Vegas, Everett has faced significant hardships in life, including the heartbreaking loss of a baby at 34 months into pregnancy earlier this year. Despite these challenges, Everett remains grounded and grateful: “Life is hard. Fighting is easy. This is all a blessing. I’m thankful to be in this position.”
Everett joined Freestyle MMA Las Vegas in 2023 under the guidance of coach Gokor Ambaryan. Ambaryan, who relocated to Las Vegas in 2016 and started his MMA gym in a garage, is set to open a new 9,000-square-foot facility on October 17.
“Gokor is straightforward and honest. He tells you how it really is and wears his heart on his sleeve. I’m truly blessed to have him as my coach and in my corner,” Everett said.
Looking ahead, the undefeated 29-year-old welterweight awaits his debut fight under the UFC banner. This milestone night marks a significant turning point for Everett, who is rapidly gaining a growing fanbase.
Fan Take: This story resonates deeply with fight fans because it embodies the essence of perseverance and the dream of rising from humble beginnings to the highest level of the sport. Everett’s journey highlights the human side of MMA and signals the arrival of a determined new talent who could bring fresh excitement to the welterweight division.
