Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to back Roberto De Zerbi with a blockbuster move for one of the Champions League’s standout performers this season, despite mounting pressure on the Italian manager.
Spurs have endured a difficult start to the campaign, with their struggles in front of goal contributing to growing concerns over their Premier League status.
There were signs of encouragement in their recent performance against Manchester United, but some disappointing finishing left them desperately needing points.
Former England striker Alan Shearer believes there are reasons for optimism, but has warned that Spurs could find themselves firmly embroiled in a relegation battle if they fail to beat Coventry City on Monday.
“I think there was definitely optimism in the performance against Man United. They missed some big chances, Solanke scored one, but he missed three or four big chances, as did others, and I think when you look at the performance overall, I thought it was much improved, much more energy and much more structure to it,” Shearer said, via football.london.
“I’ve always said the time to worry is when you’re not creating the chances and that wasn’t the case at Old Trafford. They created plenty. So, if that was to keep on going, they could have a little bit of hope, but they desperately need that win.
“I know they did really well when down to 10 men, coming back and getting a Solanke goal. So, that in itself will give them a bit of confidence, but they need a win massively.
“If they don’t beat Coventry on Monday, then I think they’ll be in a massive relegation battle, and I think that’s how big a game it is.”
Despite the growing scrutiny, Tottenham’s hierarchy are determined to stand by De Zerbi, with the club reportedly exploring ways to strengthen his squad rather than making another managerial change.
And one potential target could provide exactly the kind of cutting edge Spurs have been missing.
Tottenham eye Nicolo Tresoldi move after Champions League heroics
According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, Tottenham are among the clubs monitoring Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi following his sensational performances in the Champions League.
The 22-year-old has been in unstoppable form this season, scoring nine goals in just 11 appearances across all competitions, and currently sits top of the Champions League scoring charts after netting a hat-trick against Inter Milan in a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Spurs have reportedly scouted Tresoldi on several occasions in recent months, although they face significant competition for his signature. North London rivals Arsenal are believed to be among the frontrunners, while Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona have also been credited with an interest.
A deal would not come cheaply, either. Roma reportedly attempted to sign Tresoldi for €35m during the summer, but Club Brugge valued the striker at around €60m, a figure which is expected to rise further following his impressive European performances, meaning Spurs would need to part with a considerable fee to get a deal over the line.
For Tottenham, the interest comes at a time when their attacking options are under increasing scrutiny. Shearer’s criticism of Dominic Solanke’s wastefulness against Manchester United highlighted a persistent problem, while Richarlison has also found himself frozen out under De Zerbi, further limiting the manager’s options in the final third.
Tresoldi’s goalscoring exploits would therefore make him an attractive potential addition, particularly if Tottenham are serious about providing De Zerbi with the reinforcements needed to turn their season around.
The Italian-born Germany youth international joined Club Brugge from Hannover 96 in 2025 and has quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after young strikers in European football.
Whether Spurs can compete with Arsenal and the continent’s biggest clubs for his signature remains to be seen, but their reported interest suggests they are sticking with De Zerbi having invested significantly to rebuild his squad over the summer.
