Leeds United are interested in improving their attacking options, and they are now on alert to sign a winger ahead of the January transfer window.
Indeed, the Whites are eager to bolster their forward line, despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin making a strong start to the season, with the English striker most recently getting on the scoresheet against Manchester United at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke has been left very pleased with Calvert-Lewin’s performances, saying upon the centre-forward being selected in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in September: “Dominic is like a good wine, getting better by the year. Physically, he’s on a top level and his pace is more than good enough I would say. He’s a very complete striker.”
“At Leeds while I’ve been here we’ve made many top signings on a low budget. When I think about Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka. It’s difficult to compare because as a striker you have a different role. But he’s definitely one of our better pieces of business.”
It has been a solid start to the campaign for Farke’s side, but having only scored more than one goal in one Premier League match, the 4-1 victory against Newcastle United, the 49ers are looking to inject more attacking firepower into the squad.
Igor Paixao has been a long-standing target for the Elland Road outfit, and there has now been a fresh update on their pursuit of the Marseille winger.
Leeds keen on signing Igor Paixao
According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds are on alert to sign Paixao, and there is a feeling the Brazilian could be available, in light of Marseille’s difficult financial situation and his poor recent performances, but there will be competition in the race for his signature.
Other unnamed Premier League clubs are also keen on signing the South American winger, who has been valued at £40m, although he could feasibly be available for less, given that Marseille may be forced into a sale.
However, a deal may have to wait until the end of the campaign, with journalist Pete O’Rourke explaining: “I don’t see anything happening in January because Marseille won’t want to lose such a key player midway through the season and his price tag will probably be a bit high.”
Although the 26-year-old is yet to score a goal for Marseille this season, his performances during the 2025-26 campaign offer plenty of encouragement, with the Macapa-born winger chipping in with 19 goal involvements across all competitions.
Igor Paixao’s performance | Appearances | Goal involvements |
Ligue 1 | 30 | 12 |
Champions League | 8 | 5 |
Coupe de France | 3 | 2 |
Trophee des Champions | 1 | 0 |
Marseille manager Bruno Genesio is a big fan too, saying back in August: “Igor is an extraordinary guy, a very good player. He really enjoys training and playing. He is also building on the momentum of what he achieved last season. He was a key player for OM during the previous campaign, and right from the start of this season, he has been involved in many dangerous plays and goals; for us, he is a very important asset.”
As such, Leeds should undoubtedly look to capitalise on Marseille’s financial situation by bringing Paixao to Elland Road.
