Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been given a surprising stay of execution, following the 3-0 defeat at home against AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, with the 45-year-old set to remain in charge for the trip to Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
However, the Man United boss remains on thin ice, following his side’s disastrous start to the season, in which they have taken just seven points from eight Premier League matches, a record that leaves them one point above the relegation zone.
There are some tough fixtures on the horizon for the Red Devils, with games against Chelsea and Aston Villa pencilled in either side of a clash against AS Roma in the Champions League over the next few weeks.
As such, there is a realistic possibility United could find themselves in the bottom three before the November international break, which could spell the end for Carrick, who has just one Premier League win to his name this season.
Despite the decision to back him through the Chelsea match at least, there has been widespread speculation surrounding the Englishman’s future, and a number of potential replacements have already been identified, with former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe emerging as the top target.
Why Julian Nagelsmann could become Man Utd manager
Despite Howe being identified as Manchester United’s first-choice option, as their search for a Carrick replacement continues, German football journalist Constantin Eckner has now explained why Julian Nagelsmann holds a key advantage.
“As far as I understand it, Nagelsmann would be interested, but he’s not the frontrunner. Eddie Howe is the frontrunner, but Nagelsmann is ready.
“The DFB, the German Football Association, bought him out of his contract. So there is no hurdle to take. He can join whoever he wants, whilst Manchester United have to pay Newcastle United to get Eddie Howe as their manager right now.”
Although the 39-year-old has no experience in the Premier League, he knows the demands of managing a massive club, having guided Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in the 2021-22 season.
Jamie O’Hara has also previously urged Tottenham Hotspur to appoint the German, saying: “He’s a top, top manager. Bayern Munich were mad to sack him.
“He was only one point behind Borussia Dortmund, he had a 70% win ratio, he won every Champions League game and was in the quarter-finals. I think it was a crazy decision to get rid of him. He’s the best young manager in the world and I’d love him to go to Spurs.”
With that in mind, Nagelsmann could be a solid option as Carrick’s replacement, although his lack of Premier League experience means it would be a gamble.
