The Liverpool fanbase have grown to expect success at Anfield, and the heavy spending from the hierarchy has only reinforced their desire to see their team succeed.
Andoni Iraola has been tasked with leading the club closer towards their goals, but it remains to be seen how close the Reds will go towards silverware this campaign.
Wednesday’s victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup has pushed his men closer to a first trophy of his tenure, but they will have to defeat in-form Bournemouth if they’re to make the semi-finals.
However, despite the important matters on the pitch, the board have started to direct some of their attention towards the opening of the transfer window in January.
Why Mac Allister could depart Liverpool in January
Even though Alexis Mac Allister has remained an integral part of Liverpool’s squad in recent years, it could all be about to change for the midfielder in the months ahead.
The Argentine’s current deal expires in the summer of 2028, and there has been talk about the possibility of a new proposal being handed his way in the near future.
However, the latest reports suggest no new deal is on the horizon for the 27-year-old, with the hierarchy tempted to cash in on his services at the next opportunity.
Real Madrid are one club that is said to be keen on a deal for the former Brighton man, with Jose Mourinho said to be a big fan of the midfielder’s talent.
A sale could be the best option for all parties, with the Argentine certainly failing to deliver his best performances during the opening stages of the current campaign.
He’s only made 0.3 interceptions per 90 in the Premier League this campaign, a figure which ranks the midfielder in the bottom 8% of players in his position across Europe’s top-five leagues.
In possession, he’s been just as disappointing, as highlighted by his tally of just 0.9 chances created per 90 – also placing him below 60% of talents in the Premier League.
How Liverpool can secure a better signing than Scott
Over the last couple of weeks, a whole host of midfielders have been touted with a move to join Liverpool, but none quite as frequently as Bournemouth star Alex Scott.
The Englishman is a player who’s greatly admired by the Reds and Chelsea, and his recent contract rejection has heightened expectations that he will depart in January.
However, Marco Rose’s men are demanding at least £100m for the 23-year-old, which could prove to be a stumbling block for Iraola in his hopes of securing a reunion with the youngster.
As a result, other options are now under consideration and Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha has emerged as a possible alternative for the January window.
It’s been reported by TEAMtalk that the Reds are now eyeing a move for the German international and are closely monitoring his progress ahead of the winter market.
However, competition for the 26-year-old is said to be high, with fellow Premier League side Manchester United another club vying to secure his signature.
The Bundesliga outfit are reluctant to offload their star man during the upcoming window, which has seen them place a whopping £80m price tag above his head.
Whilst such a figure seems like a hefty one, it would be an excellent deal considering the price currently being touted to secure the signature of Bournemouth man Scott.
When comparing their respective figures from the ongoing campaign, it’s evident that a deal for Nmecha would be a better option for Iraola’s men if they are to achieve success.
The German has managed to complete 90% of the passes he’s attempted this campaign, which has seen him average an impressive 8.4 line-breaking passes per 90.
Such a figure has seen him beat 90% of midfielders in Europe’s top-five leagues to date, with the tallies produced also better than those registered by the Cherries man.
Felix Nmecha – Bundesliga stats (2026/27) | |
|---|---|
Statistics (per 90) | Tally |
Games played | 7 |
Goals scored | 2 |
Pass accuracy | 90% |
Line-breaking passes | 8.4 |
Chances created | 1.6 |
Dribble success | 58% |
Duels won | 6.8 |
Cross success | 33% |
His dominance over the Englishman is further reflected in his dribble success rate, with the £80m man a player who would offer a more progressive option than Scott.
Out of possession, Nmecha has also managed to have the upper hand over the Bournemouth star, as seen by his higher tally of defensive contributions per 90.
He’s certainly a more aggressive option in regaining possession this campaign, as seen by his tally of 1.1 times possession won in the final third per 90 – a figure two times higher than the Englishman.
£80m may be seen as an expensive deal for the Dortmund midfielder, but it would be one that would offer an immediate and long-term solution to their current issues.
He’s certainly a player who would offer more quality than Scott, with such a move undoubtedly pushing current star Mac Allister ever closer to the exit door on Merseyside.
