Sivan and Patrick Dumont have become the majority owners of the Dallas Mavericks. Last month, they acquired Miriam Adelson’s shares of the team, giving them a controlling 69% stake, as reported by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
Although Adelson has sold her shares, she remains closely connected to the franchise. Patrick Dumont, who has acted as the Mavericks’ governor since the families bought the team from Mark Cuban in 2023, is Adelson’s son-in-law, and Sivan is Adelson’s daughter.
“It’s really about a long-term commitment to Dallas,” Dumont told ESPN on Tuesday. “The Dumont family is focused on building what we believe will be the best arena in the NBA, making a significant city investment that will become the Mavericks’ home for the next 40 years. We want to create an outstanding experience for fans and inspire our team to win championships. We’re thrilled about this opportunity.”
Mark Cuban sold the Mavericks to Adelson last year at a $3.5 billion valuation but still holds a 27% ownership stake. He has since expressed regret over the sale, especially after Adelson and the Dumonts sidelined him from the team’s basketball and business operations. Cuban’s remarks came soon after the Luka Doncic trade, a move that sparked heavy criticism from Mavericks fans and led to a major team rebuild.
Patrick Dumont, who is also the CEO of Las Vegas Sands, has the option to buy another 20% of the team from Cuban in the future at the same price, a plan he intends to pursue.
“I’ve got to say, I have a lot of love for Mark. He’s been a close family friend for many years,” Dumont said. “He’s an incredibly passionate Mavericks fan and understandably frustrated. I respect that. Our goal is to make him proud and to bring success that all Mavericks fans can celebrate — ultimately winning a championship.”
The Mavericks plan to open a new arena at the Valley View Mall site in northern Dallas within the next several years, along with new offices and practice facilities. Dumont has experience overseeing large venues, including the Venetian Arena in Macao, which hosts the NBA preseason games in China.
Since 2001, the Mavericks have played at the American Airlines Center but aim to move into their new home by the 2031-32 NBA season.
“We want to bring something world-class to Dallas,” Dumont stated. “My goal is to create the best arena in the league, focusing on the court first and expanding outward to deliver the best fan experience possible — that’s what we owe to our supporters.”
Currently, the Mavericks hold a 4-3 record ahead of their game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. The team has missed the playoffs since their NBA Finals appearance led by Doncic in 2024 and struggled with a 26-56 record last season.
Fan Take: The Dumonts’ acquisition signals a major new chapter for the Mavericks, with big ambitions for the future both on and off the court. Basketball fans should watch closely, as their investments in infrastructure and team success could reshape the franchise into a perennial contender and set new standards for arena experiences in the NBA.
