Paul Wight revealed that he landed the role of Captain Insano in The Waterboy purely by chance when a casting director happened to spot him on his way to the restroom. Despite the accidental nature of the opportunity, Wight is still dedicated to developing the character and presenting it in the best possible way.
Speaking to Scott Johnson on News4JAX’s Going Ringside, the AEW commentator described Captain Insano as a lot of fun and noted the iconic status the character holds from the film. He emphasized the effort he’s putting into fully realizing the character’s potential.
Wight shared that working with Adam Sandler was a great experience, and that the casting process was an open call involving many wrestlers. While on location in Orlando for a WCW taping, Wight learned that fellow wrestler Jim Duggan had auditioned for the part, leading him to initially believe Duggan would get the role. However, the casting director caught Wight unexpectedly and insisted he audition despite his lack of preparation.
With no prior preparation, Wight improvised his reading using a Hulk Hogan-style voice and didn’t expect much. To his surprise, he was offered the part of Captain Insano and filmed his scenes about two weeks later in Orlando.
He also mentioned that before The Waterboy, his first film role was in Reggie’s Prayer, where he played a town drug dealer, highlighting an early and very different acting experience.
The Waterboy was released in 1998, featuring Wight as Captain Insano, the wrestling star admired by Sandler’s character, Bobby Boucher. Wrestling promotion AEW filed to trademark the Captain Insano name in January 2025.
Fans can look forward to AEW Dynamite: Blood and Guts airing on Wednesday, November 4, at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The show will be broadcast at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on TBS and HBO Max.
Fan Take: This story highlights an intriguing crossover moment between wrestling and mainstream entertainment, showing how wrestlers can become cultural icons beyond the ring. For fight fans, Wight’s ongoing dedication to Captain Insano could breathe new life into wrestling characters and help bridge generations of fans.
