Michael Carrick expressed that Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Roma will only hold significance if they can build on it moving forward.
The Red Devils were facing the prospect of a fourth consecutive defeat as Matias Soule scored in the 11th minute and Donyell Malen converted a penalty, putting Gian Piero Gasperini’s team up 2-0 at Old Trafford during the Champions League match on Tuesday.
However, Bruno Fernandes’ penalty just before the hour mark pulled United back into contention, and Matheus Cunha netted two goals in quick succession in the 83rd and 86th minutes, completing a remarkable turnaround.
A late red card for Cunha couldn’t overshadow the victory, as United ended a nine-match winless streak across all competitions.
The pressure has intensified on Carrick during this tough stretch, but he was cautious in labeling this victory as a turning point just yet.
In comments to Amazon Prime, Carrick—whose team will play Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend—stated, “This is just one match; what happens next is crucial. We need to take advantage of this, but the players really showed a lot in the second half.”
“It’s about making the most of this moment and moving ahead, but I definitely feel more optimistic. It’s a win for the club, and seeing the supporters leave happily is what we strive for—to give them nights like this that energize them again.”
“As a team, we demonstrated great character despite the challenges we’ve faced. This experience reveals a lot about each other. The players will learn about me, and I’ll learn more about their determination and what they’re willing to put in.”

Ten of United’s 15 attempts on goal came in the second half, with most of their expected goals (xG) generated after the break.
The Red Devils have now won both of their last two Champions League home matches where they trailed by two or more goals, notably overcoming Atalanta 3-2 in October 2021, a team also led by Gasperini.
Indeed, no team has managed to win more Champions League matches from a two-goal deficit than United, who have now accomplished this feat four times (equal with Real Madrid).
Carrick remarked, “It was a great game, and I must commend the players for showcasing their character and quality when it mattered most.
“This place creates incredible moments, and we discussed that at halftime. I felt we began to find our rhythm after conceding those early goals too easily.”
“We talked at halftime about how this venue can transform a match; it just takes a single moment. The boys seized every opportunity and performed brilliantly in the end.”
Editorial Opinion/Fan Take: This comeback adds a layer of excitement to the Premier League and Champions League, showcasing Manchester United’s resilience and potential for a resurgence. For soccer fans, it’s a reminder of the unpredictability of the sport, where one defining moment can change the course of a match, stirring hopes for a more competitive and thrilling season ahead.
