Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owners of Liverpool FC, have surfaced as potential buyers interested in acquiring a majority share of the Cadillac Formula 1 team. According to a Sportico report on Tuesday, billionaire Mark Walter is considering selling his controlling stake in Cadillac, which is valued at a staggering £2.24 billion.
Walter’s TWG Global, which recently divested its controlling interest in the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and a 13% stake in Chelsea FC, appears to be contemplating a similar move with the Cadillac F1 team. This represents a notable reversal from Walter’s earlier stance, as he had previously denied any intention to sell, affirming TWG Global’s commitment to the project as a long-term venture.
Mark Walter, 66, is currently under investigation by the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission for alleged fraud related to the management of funds in his insurance firms Delaware Life, Clear Spring, and EquiTrust.
Reports from The Washington Post and other prominent financial news sources reveal that FSG has engaged in discussions to acquire a majority stake in Cadillac, following their recent sale of approximately 38% of Liverpool FC to a consortium led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This would not be FSG’s first foray into motorsports, as they hold a 50% ownership in the RFK Racing NASCAR team. However, they face tough competition, with up to six other parties expressing interest in the Cadillac stake.
Currently, Cadillac is positioned at the bottom of the constructors’ championship and has yet to score any points in its inaugural F1 season. The team’s highest finish so far is 13th place, achieved by Valtteri Bottas at the Chinese Grand Prix. The team is also considering promoting Colton Herta to replace Bottas for the next season.
Herta is set to complete his sixth practice session at the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix to fulfill the requirements for a superlicence, which is mandatory to compete in Formula 1. While Cadillac has not yet finalized its driver lineup for 2027, it recently secured Sergio Perez with a contract extension that will keep the Mexican driver with the team through the end of this decade.
Fan Take: This potential change in ownership could bring fresh investment and strategic direction to a struggling Cadillac F1 team, sparking more competition in the sport. For racing enthusiasts, it signals exciting possibilities as a renowned group like Fenway Sports Group steps further into Formula 1, potentially accelerating the growth and popularity of the sport.
