Injuries have once again scrambled the NFL’s prime-time plans, and Thursday Night Football in Week 9 is a prime example: the Jacksonville Jaguars head to Baltimore as an unlikely 10-point favorite despite being on the road. That huge line is mostly because the Ravens have been decimated at quarterback over the past week.
Lamar Jackson returned in Week 8 but hurt his throwing hand on the Ravens’ first offensive play, promptly exited the game and has been placed on injured reserve while awaiting surgery. Backup Tyler Huntley then underwent a season-ending turf-toe injury. Baltimore moved to acquire veteran Jacoby Brissett from Arizona, but that trade isn’t finalized until the weekend. In the meantime, the Ravens will start Joe Fagnano on Thursday and also added Kedon Slovis from the Packers’ practice squad. It’s a rough spot for a team that had Super Bowl hopes, and Jacksonville — not exactly a powerhouse — gets a short-week matchup against a suddenly thin position group.
Best bet — Over 39.5
This line is risky: if Jacksonville builds a big lead they could simply grind the clock with the run game and keep the score low. Still, I expect the Jaguars to be aggressive early, and a Ravens offense led by a makeshift QB could abandon a steady run plan (even with Derrick Henry) and have to throw often to keep pace. That could lead to more possessions, mistakes, short fields and scoring from both sides, and there’s even the possibility Jacksonville puts up 40-plus in a statement game.
Player props
Zay Flowers over 4.5 receptions (-105)
Flowers was set up for a breakout last week but finished with zero production after the quarterback situation collapsed; before that he had logged five or more catches in every game this season. With Baltimore limited at QB, they’ll need to get their top playmaker involved, and I expect the staff to design quick throws to Flowers to generate YAC and keep him as a focal point.
Justice Hill over 2.5 receptions (-117)
This number feels low given Hill’s role as a reliable outlet when the Ravens are trailing or when a lesser-experienced QB needs a safety valve. He had four catches on eight targets in a similar script last week and should see plenty of short passing opportunities in a game where Baltimore may be playing from behind.
Anytime touchdown picks
Brian Thomas Jr. (+550)
That’s a long price, but Thomas — a disappointment since a strong rookie campaign — did catch a touchdown last week (his only catch). Jacksonville may be open to trading him before the deadline and could spotlight him on national TV to help his market. If they want to boost his value, he could see early looks in this game.
Ja’Kobi Lane (+750)
Passing touchdowns for Ravens receivers are unpredictable right now, but this big number on a rookie intrigues. Lane turned heads in training camp, has some familiarity with Fagnano from the depth-chart dynamics, and could benefit from a ‘throw everything at the wall’ game plan. I’d treat this as a small, speculative play.
Fan Take:
This flurry of Ravens QB injuries is a reminder of how quickly a season’s trajectory can change — it turns a primetime tilt into a testing ground for depth players and coaching adjustments. For fans, it’s an opportunity to see unexpected faces and strategies, but it also underscores how fragile Super Bowl aspirations can be when a single position collapses.
