The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has celebrated Cristiano Ronaldo as “the greatest player of all time” following his announcement of retirement from international football.
Ronaldo decided to step away from representing Portugal last Thursday after a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus during the latest international break.
At 41, he holds the record for the most appearances (234) and goals (146) for Portugal, having made his international debut in 2003.
He led Portugal to their first major title in 2016 by winning the Euros and also secured the Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo retires as the only player to score at least 10 goals in both the World Cup (11) and the European Championships (14), with the latter being a tournament record.
The FPF issued a statement on Thursday announcing plans for a farewell tribute to the Portuguese legend.
This statement highlighted the federation’s immense gratitude towards their “eternal captain” and acknowledged his remarkable service to the national team.

In their message, the FPF expressed their profound admiration and gratitude to Ronaldo for his exceptional contributions to Portugal’s footballing legacy.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has raised Portugal’s profile and inspired countless young athletes who aspire to emulate him, earning the title of the best player of all time for many of us,” the statement read.
“We are committed to ensuring that this farewell is honored with the tribute it deserves, where fans and the nation can once again celebrate the player who has given us so much.”
Former club Manchester United joined in sending their best wishes, along with Ronaldo’s former teammates Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.

On the other hand, Portugal’s coach Jorge Jesus suggested that Ronaldo was inclined to retire after the 2026 World Cup but had been persuaded to continue playing.
“This decision is entirely his. We previously discussed it before the recent call-up,” Jorge Jesus shared on Canal 11.
“I asked him to remain with the team for my sake, but I respect his choice. He is not only a global icon but also a significant figure for Portugal and our national team.”
“He serves as a role model for the youth in Portugal. I experienced working with him for a year at Al-Nassr, and he will always symbolize our national team, our people, and our history.”
Fan Take: Ronaldo’s retirement signifies the end of an extraordinary chapter in soccer, resonating deeply with fans worldwide who have witnessed his remarkable journey. As he leaves the international stage, it raises questions about the legacy he leaves behind and the next generation of players who may strive to fill his illustrious shoes.
