Tony Khan’s approach to creative direction in AEW has generally received positive feedback, with many praising his willingness to collaborate. However, WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts thinks Khan could benefit from being more open to advice from others. Having spent several years with AEW, Roberts observed Khan developing as a booker and shared in an interview with Nick Teodoro that while Khan is a kind person, he should relax control and embrace outside input more.
“There are many differences, especially in creativity. Tony needs to ease up a bit and listen to more advice,” Roberts said. “He’s got a solid product and a lot of talent, but I feel they could be utilized better. These are just my thoughts. I enjoy working for Tony Khan and wish him all the best—he’s a great guy.”
Although Khan initially handled bookings solo, reports from last year indicated he now has assistance from a few wrestlers backstage. Roberts recently announced his departure from AEW, concluding a partnership that began in 2019. During his AEW tenure, Roberts managed Lance Archer, whom he praises highly and believes has yet to receive the opportunities he merits.
“It was an excellent team-up, and we had what the fans wanted. Archer is incredibly talented but has never been given the break he truly deserves. It’s really unfortunate,” Roberts remarked. He even encouraged fans to petition for Archer to become a champion. Roberts managed Archer from 2020 for several years before transitioning to manage La Facción Ingobernable, marking his last significant role in AEW.
Fan Take: This insight from a wrestling legend like Jake Roberts highlights the importance of openness and adaptability in creative leadership for a wrestling promotion’s success. If Khan takes this advice to heart, AEW could unlock even more potential, leading to fresh storylines and greater opportunities for deserving talent—something fans are eager to see.
