Jesper Sorensen has encouraged his Vancouver Whitecaps team to “maintain our competitive spirit” as they prepare for their Decision Day showdown against CF Montreal this Saturday.
In their previous outing, Vancouver clinched the top position in the Western Conference with a commanding 5-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders.
The Whitecaps are in strong form; following a series of four winless matches (D3 L1), they have won three out of their last four games (L1), scoring nine goals in the last two matches.
Nonetheless, they’ve faced defeat against Montreal earlier this season, conceding 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals of the Canadian Championship, where Montreal took the second leg 2-1 at home.
Sorensen is aiming for a more favorable outcome this time, especially with the playoffs approaching.
“I’m always looking to win the game,” Sorensen commented regarding his strategy for the match against Montreal. “We’ve already faced them once this year, and it didn’t go well for us. I hope we can improve this time.
“We’ll be mindful of both immediate needs and the bigger picture when it comes to team selection. It’s essential that we uphold our competitiveness and the solid performances we’ve recently showcased.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH
CF Montreal – Prince Owusu
Prince Owusu heads into the season’s final match leading his team with 21 direct goal contributions (15 goals, six assists) for Montreal. Only Ignacio Piatti (three instances) and Marco Di Vaio (in 2013) have registered more contributions in a single regular season for the club’s MLS history.
Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White
Brian White netted two goals in Vancouver’s victory over Seattle, bringing his total to 20 goals for the 2026 regular season. He needs two more goals on the final match day to tie the Whitecaps’ single-season scoring record of 22, set by Camilo Sanvezzo in 2013.
MATCH PREDICTION: VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN
Vancouver enters the last match with 61 points, having secured the top seed in the West. A win would also give the club a new record for single-season points, exceeding the 63 gained last year.
Montreal has managed only two wins in their last 22 regular-season matches since mid-May (D8 L12), earning just two points from the last six (D2 L4). Since May 13, no team has earned fewer points than Montreal’s 14.
However, Montreal remains unbeaten in their last seven home matches across all competitions against the Whitecaps, last losing at home in April 2017.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
CF Montreal – 24.4%
Draw – 22.9%
Vancouver Whitecaps – 52.7%
Fan Take: This matchup is crucial not only for playoff positioning but also reflects the larger narratives of rivalry and redemption within the league. Fans are eager to see if Vancouver can break past their previous shortcomings against Montreal and set a new points record, adding an exhilarating layer to this pivotal showdown in the MLS.
