I’m really hoping to see Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn come out on top against World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel this weekend. If more wrestlers were heading to Riyadh, interference from 946 might make that outcome possible. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely, but it’s great to see Zayn delivering powerful and compelling promos leading up to the bout, as he did tonight.
Zayn kicked off “SmackDown” by attacking Reigns with a Helluva Kick after the 946 group assaulted him on “Raw.” Before he could speak much to the crowd, Jimmy Uso appeared to confront him. I appreciated how Zayn reminded Uso that he still considers him an “Honorary Uce” and that family ties run deep, which contrasted with the colder message he gave Reigns. I also liked Zayn’s comment about how, in a different reality, he’d be teaming with the Bloodline against Royce Keys’ faction.
The shift after that line was excellent. Zayn made it clear that, in this reality, he’s the WWE Champion. When he mentioned that he thought Jimmy would understand, I initially got mixed up, thinking he meant Jey Uso, who previously held the World Heavyweight title. But it quickly clicked, because Zayn knows Jimmy is the one who’s always taken decisive action—like when Jimmy was the first to beat him after Zayn’s betrayal of Reigns. Highlighting this history added depth to the storyline between Zayn and Reigns, even without the champion himself appearing.
Zayn is right in saying he’s doing whatever it takes to earn the respect he deserves—something he’s finally gained from Reigns. According to Uso, after Monday’s events, Reigns’ attention is fully on Zayn, setting the stage for their upcoming showdown.
WWE is handling the dynamic between the Zayn vs. Reigns matchup at Crown Jewel and the ongoing Bloodline feud with 946 far better than expected. When Keys and 946 attacked Uso following the promo, Zayn walked away instead of intervening to help his “Uce.” While it’s unclear how Zayn and Reigns’ rivalry will evolve post-Crown Jewel, this added layer intensifies their history, promising an exciting future encounter.
