Noni Madueke has transformed his performance since being excluded from the England squad earlier this season, according to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners are heading into the international break with a six-point lead over Manchester City after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Hull City.
Martin Odegaard netted the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on a parry from Konstantinos Tzolakis after Madueke’s shot.
Madueke, filling in for the injured Bukayo Saka, proved to be Arsenal’s primary offensive threat in what was otherwise a challenging game. He led the match with four shots, an expected goals figure of 0.37 (xG), 14 touches in the box, eight attempted dribbles (six completed), and won eight duels.
Only Odegaard surpassed Madueke in chance creation, setting up five opportunities to Madueke’s four.
Arteta feels that Madueke has elevated his game since missing out on the England squad during the last international break, where he had previously been an important player in this year’s World Cup.
Despite being left out for the November Nations League matches, Arteta praised how Madueke trained individually during the last break, indicating an exemplary response. He stated, “His reaction is a remarkable example for the team, showing his desire to improve.”
Arteta emphasized that Madueke emerged as a different player after the setback, revealing, “He wasn’t going to accept that situation; he was serious about his development. Since then, he has been outstanding.”
Arteta noted that Madueke had several chances to score and directly contributed to Odegaard’s goal, although he acknowledged there are still aspects to refine for greater efficiency.

Saturday’s victory marked the 34th time Arsenal has won a Premier League match 1-0 under Arteta, the most for any club since he took charge in December 2019.
Arteta recognizes there’s room for improvement in the final third, pointing to their tendency for offside calls—like one on Kai Havertz that negated a penalty—as an area to focus on.
“We must be more efficient,” Arteta remarked. “We had two one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper and another possible penalty. We need to capitalize more and be pragmatic.”
“At times, we seek the perfect goal against well-organized defenses, but we need to be more dynamic. Scoring earlier in matches would also change the dynamic.”
He added that while they have many areas to work on, cutting down on offsides is crucial, mentioning the stats from the Villa game as a stark reminder of the need for improvement.
Arsenal will face Newcastle United at St James’ Park on November 21, followed by a Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund and a clash with Manchester City—two significant tests for the Premier League leaders.
