Carlos Prates has publicly set a timeline for UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev’s next appearance in the Octagon. Makhachev was initially scheduled to fight Prates at UFC 336 in January but opted not to compete then. Consequently, Prates will now face Michael Morales for the interim UFC welterweight title.
While Prates is currently focused on his upcoming fight against Morales, he hopes that a victory will earn him the opportunity to challenge Makhachev for the undisputed championship. To that end, Prates has given Makhachev a clear deadline to defend his title.
In an interview with Squawka, Prates stated that Makhachev should either defend his belt by June or consider vacating it. “He should vacate his belt — not immediately, because we still plan to fight for the interim title. But after Ramadan, we want to fight in June. If he’s not ready by then, it’s time to retire,” Prates explained.
Prates also expressed frustration with Makhachev’s sporadic fight schedule, comparing it to the approach taken by former champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, who fought only when he felt prepared. According to Prates, who prefers staying active, this strategy is less than ideal. “They book fights when they want; maybe only one fight per year. It’s their choice as champions, but I don’t think it’s the right way,” he said.
Additionally, Prates speculated that Makhachev might be contemplating retirement because he’s earned enough money and wants to focus on family life. “At some point, you prioritize family and health. I think that’s a smart choice,” Prates acknowledged.

Fan Take: This deadline puts added pressure on Makhachev to stay active, which is crucial for the excitement and momentum of the welterweight division. For fight fans, it signals a potential shakeup in the title landscape that could open doors for new contenders and fresh matchups in the UFC.
