Manchester United have now opened talks to sign an “exceptional” player, and potential managerial candidate Cesc Fabregas is known to be a big fan.
Cesc Fabregas in line to replace Michael Carrick at Man Utd
Despite guiding his side to a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory against AS Roma in the Champions League, Michael Carrick remains under pressure, as there is a good chance Man United could be in the relegation zone for the international break.
United slipped into the bottom three following Manchester City’s 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, and they are two points from safety heading into a home game against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Having made their worst start to a season in just under 40 years, the Red Devils have been searching for a new manager, and contact has now been made to appoint Como manager Cesc Fabregas, who has been making a name for himself in the Serie A and Europe.
The former Chelsea midfielder led his side to Champions League qualification last season, and they have been making a real impression in Europe’s top competition, winning 9-1 away at Lens in their last match to rise to fourth in the table.
As such, it is no wonder the Spaniard is being considered as a replacement for Carrick, but if he does take the reins, a squad overhaul may be needed, and a Como star has now been identified as a target.
Man Utd pushing to sign Jacobo Ramon
According to a report from Spain (via TEAMtalk), Man United are now pushing to sign Jacobo Ramon, having opened talks regarding a deal for the Como defender, who could be brought in as a replacement for either Lisandro Martinez or Harry Maguire.
Martinez and Maguire’s contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, which means United may have to bring in at least two new centre-backs, and they have been in hot pursuit of Ramon, who has been valued at £42m by his current employers.
Man Utd’s current centre-backs | Age | Contract expiry |
Lisandro Martinez | 28 | 2027 |
Leny Yoro | 20 | 2029 |
Ayden Heaven | 20 | 2029 |
Matthijs de Ligt | 27 | 2029 |
Harry Maguire | 33 | 2027 |
The need to strengthen the defence could be exacerbated by De Ligt’s failure to stay fit, with the Dutchman featuring for just 81 minutes across two matches in all competitions this season, after missing the vast majority of the 2025-26 campaign.
How Jacobo Ramon is performing for Como
Ramon, on the other hand, has been reliable for Como, making 14 appearances in all competitions this term, and he has been lauded as “exceptional” by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente.
Fabregas is a big fan of his centre-back too, saying: “Jacobo Ramon’s numbers don’t surprise me. He was perfect for our style of play. The only doubt we had was whether he would compete in Italian football, how he would adapt to such a competitive game.
“He has improved a lot and I’m not surprised by his play on the ball. I knew he was that type of player, but there are players who are a bit of a surprise in one context or another. But it’s different; some players are made of different stuff.”
At just 21-years-old, the Spaniard still has plenty of time to develop even further, and he could be a fantastic long-term addition to Man United’s backline.
