Mike Mondo recently recounted an amusing backstage moment involving Vince McMahon and Gerald Brisco following a 2006 Spirit Squad segment. During this iconic WWE scene, D-Generation X doused Vince, Shane McMahon, and The Spirit Squad with a messy concoction of dog food, corn, Snickers bars, and syrup on the entrance ramp. Mondo, who performed as Mikey in the Spirit Squad, shared on the podcast Rewind Recap Relive that after the segment, a slop-covered Vince jumped onto Brisco as a prank, causing Brisco—who was easily nauseated by gross things—to vomit backstage. Despite Brisco’s reaction, Vince found the moment hilarious, enjoying the successful rib on his close friend.
Mondo also revealed that Kenny created the Spirit Squad’s signature move, the High Spirits finisher, where all five members would grab an opponent’s limbs and launch them into the air. Before executing the finisher on Shawn Michaels at a pay-per-view event, Michaels insisted on a test run, which was done on Jimmy Wang Yang—a trial that seemingly helped Wang Yang get rehired by WWE. Praising Michaels as the finest in-ring performer he’s faced, Mondo noted that Michaels pushed the group to appear credible against top stars like Triple H, even warning them he would dominate them if they didn’t “sell” well.
The Spirit Squad held the World Tag Team Championship in April 2006 but eventually dropped the titles to Ric Flair and Roddy Piper at Cyber Sunday in November of that year. Mondo has previously discussed the formation of the group and his time with them.
On another note, Mondo credited veteran wrestling manager Jim Cornette with significant influence on his career, noting Cornette’s role in his opportunities in Ohio Valley Wrestling and Ring of Honor. Mondo shared that he frequently traveled with Cornette to various shows, learning invaluable lessons about writing television as well as getting Cornette’s unique take on regional fast food.
Looking ahead, Mondo expressed his ambition to claim the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship, currently held by “Thrillbilly” Silas Mason. Having faced Mason at Riot Fest, Mondo hopes to bring their rivalry to the NWA Powerrr platform, firmly stating that while Mason is doing a solid job, he belongs in a different category once they face off in the ring.
NWA Powerrr broadcasts on Comet, with past episodes available on Tubi, and Mike Mondo can be found on social media as @TheMikeMondo.
