Adams – Southland head golf coach Sam Kren has been a little cooler this summer thanks to the efforts of his team’s golfers.

After Southland senior Anica Erickson organized a “longest golf golf” fundraiser that raised $15,000, Crane agreed to have the team shave their heads. Erickson, who set up a fundraiser as part of his senior project, organized a day of golf on June 19th, from 4:45am to 9pm.

“A lot of people came out,” Erickson said. “Anyone who wanted to play could come and join us.”

Funds raised for the event funded new putting and chipping greens at Cedar Valley Golf Course, and Grand Meadow/Leroio Strander will be welcomed as the Rebels had 38 golfers on their team this spring.

“The golf course did a lot for us by going out here and practicing for free and holding tournaments here,” Erickson said. “It was really great to give high school players generous discounts for summer membership and allow them to give back to the golf course.”

Klaehn said improvements to the course are essential for future practice spaces, and he praised the team for finding ways to step up and give back.

“These kids have really grown up to enjoy the game, and it’s really cool to see how passionate they have for golf,” Klen said. “When we see them give back, we’re really proud of our coaches. Golf is a truly addictive sport. You want to hit that first shot, get that first par, or do it again. We’re a pretty laidback group and we really enjoy it.”

Erickson learned about organizations, community outreach and non-profit taxes while setting up events. She also created posters and banners to promote the event, making sure her teammates would be involved.

Overall, she has come a long way with her love for golf as a sport.

“When I first joined the golf team, it was because my friends were here and that was a big part of the time I spent with them,” Erickson said. “As the years go by, I’ve gotten better with sports. Believe it or not. The feeling you get when you finally do what you really worked is enough to make you come back.”

Fundraiser worked through Rebel Nation in Southland and the money was sent to the golf course.
