Wimbledon 2025: No. 3 Jessica Pegula was eliminated in the first round with a shocking loss to Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Jessica Pegra entered Wimbledon with high expectations. As the third female number 3, Pegra was expected to run deep in the event.

That push hope ended on Tuesday. Because Pegra shockedly lost in the first round of the tournament to Elisabetta Cocchialetto. Pegula lost to the female No. 116 player (6-2, 6-3) in straight sets.

It was a distinctively sloppy day for Pegra. Serve was a big problem for her. She was only able to play 52% of her first service. When she managed it, she worked well and earned 65% of those points. However, when she had to use her second serve, she struggled and scored points with just 42% of her second service points. Pegra could not withstand the loss and committed 24 forced errors against the Coxialet.

These mistakes led to a quick match. Pegula was eliminated by Cocciaretto in just 58 minutes.

It was the second mark when Pegra and Cossialett squared. Before Tuesday, the two were facing each other at Wimbledon in 2023. Pegra did a quick work on Cocchialett in that match, beating 6-4, 6-0.

Pegra hasn’t won a Grand Slam yet, but she usually runs deep at each event. Tuesday’s losses mark the first time since 2020 that Pegra has been eliminated from the grand slam in the first round.

Due to all of Pegra’s success, Wimbledon remains her toughest grand slam event. Entering Tuesday, Pegra had just 62% win rate in the tournament.

That number is lower following a first round defeat to Cocciaretto.

The victory advances Cocciaretto to the second round at Wimbledon for the third time in her career. She made it up until the third round of 2023, but missed the tournament in 2024 due to illness.
