Wimbledon 2025: Brazil’s João Fonseca becomes the youngest man to reach the third round since 2011

Brazil’s Joan Fonseca is the youngest man to reach the third round of Wimbledon since Australia’s Bernard Tomic in 2011.

The 18-year-old Fonseca achieved the feat on Wednesday when he defeated American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Fonseca didn’t just rewrite the history of all the English clubs with victory. He also became the first Brazilian to reach this stage of the Grass Grand Slam since Thomaz Bellucci in 2010.

Fonseca beat 24-year-old Brooksby in a four-set match that lasted three hours and 14 minutes.

He now faces Chile’s Nicholas Jarry in the third round.

When Fonseca made his Wimbledon debut on Monday, he defeated British Jacob Fianley in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 7-6.

Fonseca climbed the professional ladder in 2024. After starting a year ranked outside the top 700, he reached 145th place. He then joined Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz as the third 18-year-old to win the next Gen ATP Final.

Fonseca was upset at the time with his first main draw appearance in the Grand Slam tournament. 9 Andreil Brev, Russia, opening in Australia. A month later he won his first ATP Tour title at the IEB+ Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.

Currently, Fonseca is number 54 in the world, turning his head at Wimbledon.

During his second round victory, he recorded 50 winners. Brooksby responded to the loss of the sales set with the second set victory and threatened to answer again in the fourth set. He even smashed Fonseca’s serve up things 4-4, but Fonseca was locked up to finish American 6-4.
