St. Louis – Chris Richards, a defender for the US men’s soccer team, was quick to express his eagerness to face Mexico in the Concacaf Gold Cup final. Just one hour after the US triumphed over Guatemala with a score of 2-1 in the semi-finals, Richards made it clear he was ready to take on a historic rival in Houston on Sunday (coverage begins at 6 PM on FOX).

Meanwhile, Mexico was engaged in a goalless struggle against Honduras, but that didn’t deter Richards’ determination. “Absolutely,” he affirmed when asked if he was ready. “We owe them something for our loss in October when they beat us 2-0 in Guadalajara. We can settle that by winning the trophy.”

Richards and his teammates got their desire when Mexico advanced by defeating Honduras 1-0 in Santa Clara, California. A vibrant crowd of over 70,000 is expected at NRG Stadium, the home venue for the NFL’s Houston Texans.

“It’s unbelievable to play in this atmosphere after watching the US and Mexico games,” said Diego Luna, a Mexican-American forward who netted both goals against Guatemala.

The anticipation for Sunday’s match is palpable. Wednesday’s semi-final proved to serve as an excellent rehearsal for head coach Mauricio Pochettino, even if most of the 22,000 attendees were cheering for Guatemala. The Guatemalans hadn’t reached the Gold Cup semi-finals in nearly three decades, creating an electrifying atmosphere that echoed throughout the stadium.

“It’s extremely intense,” stated Tim Ream from St. Louis. “It heightens the stakes and adds pressure.”

Throughout the match, the US players generally handled the intensity well. Luna’s two early goals within the first 15 minutes deflated the atmosphere for a moment, but the US found ways to get back into contention.

“They had nothing to lose,” noted Ream, reflecting on Guatemala’s strategy after falling behind 2-0 early on.

When the match concluded, Guatemala had maintained 51% possession and outshot the US 20-12. They ultimately found the net against goalkeeper Matt Freeze, making the final ten minutes unbearable for the US supporters.

Regardless, Pochettino’s squad showed resilience. These lessons could prove invaluable in their home stadium this weekend and even as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

“This game tonight is like my younger sibling at a US-Mexico match,” said Richards. “If they felt nervous, the next one will be even bigger… It was important for the young guys to experience this.”

Veterans like Ream and Richards weren’t surprised that the US team felt like the away team during this intense match. American squads have faced this dynamic for decades, especially against countries where soccer is revered. For many younger players on the roster, this is a new experience, with only a handful, including AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, having played in matches like this.

“It’s unrealistic to watch the US-Mexico matches and then step into one yourself,” said Luna.

The atmosphere was unexpected, as Pochettino described, “Incredible Guatemalan fans created an atmosphere we didn’t anticipate.”

Ream added, “You play in America, yet 95% of the fans are Guatemalan. You have to acknowledge that and enjoy it.”

Luna embraced the moment, stating, “I loved it. It felt like every game.”

The upcoming final carries greater significance, yet the young US team has demonstrated considerable grit, including a penalty shootout victory over Costa Rica in the quarterfinals. They’ve secured their spot on the grandest stage in this corner of soccer.

Not many foresaw a US-Mexico final at the tournament’s onset, especially after the Americans’ long stretch of draws since 2007.

“We’re headed to the final that everyone doubted a month ago,” Ream said. “We’ll prove them wrong.”

No matter the outcome, the US team is poised for success.

“It’s new for many players to experience this environment, and it’s something we can continue to build on,” Luna remarked. “This is a great preview for Sunday.”

Fan Take: The anticipation around the US-Mexico Gold Cup final showcases the growing intensity and passion in American soccer. For fans, victories in such high-stakes matches can redefine the sport’s narrative in the U.S., pushing soccer further into the mainstream.
