Aleix Espargaro Declares: “Honda Climbs Back to the Summit”

Aleix Espargaro, a new test and wildcard rider for HRC, believes that the technical changes coming to MotoGP in 2027 will speed up Honda’s comeback to the front of the pack. Espargaro, who has won three MotoGP races and will retire from full-time racing with Aprilia at the end of 2024, has signed a three-year deal with Honda to help develop the next-generation RCV bike.

Ducati currently fields six riders, compared to four each from Honda, Yamaha, KTM, and Aprilia, while Japanese manufacturers are maximizing their expanded testing allowances under MotoGP’s concession system. Honda’s test team features former premier class riders Espargaro, Stephen Bradl, and Takaki Nakagami.

Espargaro thinks the switch from Michelin to Pirelli tires in 2027 will have a bigger effect than the move to smaller 850cc engines. "Tires make the biggest difference to a bike," he said, reflecting on his experience with different tire brands.

The upcoming 2027 rules will ban ride height devices and enforce tighter aerodynamic restrictions, changes Espargaro feels will be beneficial for Honda. "Honda is doing everything possible to win again," he said. "But you can’t buy or invent time; it just takes time. Still, with the new rules and tires, the time needed will be shorter, which plays to our advantage."

Honda riders Johann Zarco and Joan Mir have shown strong performances this year, with Zarco leading Honda’s charge from seventh in the championship standings. Honda is currently fourth in the Constructors’ standings, already surpassing their 2024 points tally by 75 points.

Espargaro praised Honda’s adaptability, noting changes in chassis and aerodynamics since preseason, including his input on the carbon fiber swingarm. “Honda listens a lot, and I’m happy to help them and race as a wildcard — it’s a new chapter I’m enjoying.”

Fan Take: This development is thrilling news for MotoGP fans as Honda’s resurgence could shake up the current dominance of Ducati and other manufacturers. With fresh talent like Espargaro aiding bike development and major technical changes on the horizon, the 2027 season promises exciting new rivalries and innovations in the sport.
