Steelers’ Johnne Smith Open to Trade from Dolphins, Pittsburgh: “Grateful for the Opportunity”

Former Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith has broken his silence following his unexpected trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers, revealing a strained relationship with his previous team. Last season, Smith had a strong showing with 88 receptions, 884 yards, and eight touchdowns, matching his career best. Speaking on “The Terron Armstead” podcast, Smith expressed gratitude for his new opportunity but admitted feeling undervalued by the Dolphins, who seemed to want him to stick rigidly to their offensive scheme despite his productivity.

Unlike Jalen Ramsey, who had lost interest in staying with Miami, Smith had hoped to remain with the Dolphins long-term, even planning to sign an extension. However, talks fell through when the Dolphins indicated they could not offer a deal, prompting Smith to sign with the Steelers, where he felt more appreciated both financially and contractually. Although he had envisioned finishing his career in Miami, Smith acknowledged the business nature of the NFL and accepted the move.

Joining the Steelers, Smith brings a versatile weapon to quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ passing game, adding to a receiver group that includes DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods, and Romaine Wilson. The tight end room also features Pat Freyelmus, who posted 65 catches, 653 yards, and seven touchdowns last season, alongside Darnell Washington, a powerful 6-foot-7, 265-pound player with 14 starts in two NFL seasons.

Smith will reunite with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who coached him during his previous stint with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have replaced Smith by trading for Darren Waller from the New York Giants, with Waller planning a comeback after initially retiring post-2023 season.

Fan Take: Jonnu Smith’s move to Pittsburgh highlights the often harsh business realities of the NFL, where even productive players can find themselves unloved by their team. This trade adds a dynamic element to the Steelers’ offense, signaling a thrilling new chapter for fans eager to see how Smith and Rodgers connect on the field.
