Meet Daron Holmes II: The Rookie Overlooking Denver Nuggets Poised to Win the Finals

The Denver Nuggets have been actively making moves this offseason to bolster their roster depth, with a notable focus on rookies. They’ve traded Michael Porter Jr. for Cameron Johnson and Dario Šarić, who was part of Jonas Valančiūnas’ package, and signed Bruce Brown in free agency. The team is set to remain strong in the competitive Western Conference, relying on star players Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon.

Denver will also bring back DaRon Holmes II, their 22nd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Holmes II, an All-American from Dayton, led the Atlantic 10 conference in points and rebounds per game during his third season, averaging 20.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks with a remarkable 54.4% shooting accuracy. Despite being slightly undersized at 6’10”, he is an explosive athlete and a reliable paint defender who also has a solid three-point shot, making him a versatile modern center.

While Holmes II is still developing and may not yet be a regular scorer, he offers the Nuggets a physical presence in the paint and the ability to stretch the floor alongside Jokic. If he struggles initially, Valančiūnas is expected to take on a larger role off the bench. Jokic’s versatility allows him to adapt easily, either facilitating plays externally or defending the paint, depending on Holmes II’s performance. Although Holmes II might initially serve as a third-string center, he is expected to earn playing time as a role player or during less critical moments.

The Nuggets are optimistic about their championship prospects this season, and Holmes II’s growth could provide a crucial boost to their frontcourt.

Fan Take: This development is exciting for basketball fans because it highlights how the Nuggets are blending veteran talent with promising young players to build a championship-caliber team. DaRon Holmes II’s potential to impact both ends of the court shows the evolving role of centers in modern basketball, blending traditional physicality with shooting and versatility.
