Verstappen is a bat from future questions and “assumptions”

Max Verstappen refused to be drawn to his future at the British Grand Prix in reports that he was open to switching to Mercedes in 2026.

Sky Italy has argued that Verstappen and Mercedes are having specific discussions about their moves for next season, with Red Bull behind McLaren this year, and that Mercedes’ power units are expected to be stronger in 2026. Verstappen was asked about weighing familiar environments with new teams during these periods of change, but said he has not made that choice now.

“There are no decisions at this time,” Verstappen said. “So for me, it’s not ’26, etc. I’m focusing on what’s in front of me and working with the team. Of course, a lot of people make up the assumptions, but that’s not me.

“To be honest, there’s nothing else to add compared to what I said last week.”

In Austria, Verstappen was unable to commit to Red Bull when given the chance in 2026 and refused to do so again, refusing to discuss whether he had clauses in the contract.

“To be honest, I’m not talking about my contract. I think it’s a bit easier for everyone,” he said. “Like I said last week, that’s all I have to say about it.”

Verstappen didn’t give Red Bull the same support, saying George Russell said Thursday he felt Mercedes was giving him the best opportunity to win a driver’s championship despite multiple unknowns.

“I don’t think anyone can say that they’re 100% sure they’ll be completely comfortable next year,” he said. “There’s so many unknowns next year anyway. The only thing I have to do is drive what I have fast.”
