America vs. Mexico: The Missing Stars—Exploring Why Christian Pulisic and Others Won’t Compete in the Gold Cup

The US men’s national soccer team will compete without their star players in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final against their traditional rivals, Mexico, this Sunday. While Mexico has bolstered its roster for this crucial tournament, the US is missing key figures like Christian Pulisic, often referred to as "Captain America." This raises the question: what has led to the US team being so undermanned ahead of this pivotal match?

Why Key Players Are Absent

One notable absence is Christian Pulisic, who opted out of the Gold Cup after enduring a challenging couple of seasons with AC Milan. Pulisic expressed that he had offered to participate in friendly matches against Turkey and Switzerland before the tournament, but coach Mauricio Pochettino turned down the request.

"That’s the coach’s choice," Pulisic acknowledged. "I respect it completely; though I didn’t fully understand, that’s how it is."

During a pre-match press conference, Pochettino addressed Pulisic’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the team’s strategies. "Players don’t need to understand," Pochettino asserted. "They need to listen and adhere to our plans. They can’t dictate the strategy. I understand his desire to play in friendly matches instead of the Gold Cup, but it’s crucial he recognizes our decisions."

Club World Cup Involvement

As the Gold Cup showcases the top teams in CONCACAF, the world’s elite clubs are participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Weston McKennie represented Juventus in all four matches before they were eliminated by Real Madrid. He considered a transfer to the Premier League’s Nottingham Forest but ultimately decided against it.

Reina, another American player, saw limited action in the Club World Cup, playing only 12 minutes as Dortmund gets ready to face Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Injuries Take Their Toll

Some key players previously featured in the 2022 FIFA World Cup are sidelined due to injuries. Sergiño Dest, who last played for the US in March 2024 due to an ACL tear, has been left off the Gold Cup roster to focus on his recovery at PSV Eindhoven. His place has been taken by John Tolkien from Holstein Kiel.

Antonee "Jedi" Robinson also faced challenges after a strong season with Fulham, undergoing minor knee surgery. He is expected to be ready for the Premier League’s start on August 15.

Fan Take: The absence of key players like Pulisic and McKennie underscores the challenges faced by the USMNT as they look to build momentum and develop future talent. For fans, this situation serves as both a disappointment and a crucial opportunity to cultivate new stars who can carry the team forward in international competitions.
