Surprise at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Botafogo Edges Out PSG 1-0 in a Stunning Upset!

The opening match of the 2025 Club World Cup on Sunday saw anticipated results between the European powerhouses and their non-European challengers. However, non-European squads have started to hold their own, as demonstrated on Thursday when Botafogo pulled off a stunning 1-0 upset against Paris Saint-Germain in their second group stage match.

Following a heavy 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid earlier in the week, PSG aimed for a win to secure their progression to the knockout phase of the tournament. Instead, it was Brazilian side Botafogo that emerged victorious, benefiting from a passionate crowd at the Rose Bowl.

So far, the tournament has featured some surprising performances, such as Inter Milan settling for a 1-1 draw against Monterrey and Real Madrid nearly faltering with a 1-1 tie against Al Giral.

Botafogo’s triumph stands out as a significant upset in the history of the Club World Cup. PSG entered the match as the top team, not only in this tournament but also in the UEFA Champions League, yet fell to the Brazilian team with little resistance.

Despite holding a commanding 75%-25% possession and firing 16 shots compared to Botafogo’s four, PSG struggled to convert their chances. Botafogo made the most of their opportunities, landing all four of their shots on target, compared to just two from PSG.

In the first half, Botafogo consistently pressured PSG, and their breakthrough came in the 36th minute when striker Igor Jesus outmaneuvered two defenders during a quick counterattack to score.

As the match progressed, PSG failed to find an equalizer. Early in the second half, they had several chances, including a goal that was disallowed for offside in the 79th minute. Botafogo’s solid defense and remarkable saves from goalkeeper John Victor thwarted PSG’s attempts.

With time running out, PSG was awarded a free kick just outside the box that could have leveled the score, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s shot hit the crossbar, preserving Botafogo’s lead.

Even in the dying moments of stoppage time, PSG continued to push for a goal, but Botafogo’s defense held strong.

This result shakes up Group B, leaving all four teams with a chance to advance to the next stage. Notably, Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 defeat to PSG now carries significant weight. Botafogo, on the other hand, looks well-positioned for the knockout rounds.

Fan Take: This upset matters because it illustrates that in soccer, no team should ever be underestimated, regardless of their background or history. Such results keep the competition exciting and can inspire future generations of players, highlighting the growth of football in regions outside Europe.
