Retired UFC Star John Jones Hit with Criminal Charges: Lawyers Deem Cases “Incredible” and “Targeted”

Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, shortly after UFC president Dana White announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, has been reported by the Albuquerque Journal to be involved in a new legal issue. Jones is accused of misdemeanor hit-and-run following a car accident in New Mexico back in February and is slated to appear in court on July 24 for a bond hearing. Witnesses told police that Jones fled the accident scene on foot, and although Jones denies driving the vehicle, claiming the woman in the car was intoxicated and gave false statements to avoid a DWI arrest, police are investigating the claims.

Throughout his career, Jones has faced numerous controversies including drug suspensions, legal troubles, and multiple vacated titles. His attorney has criticized the police investigation as unjust and suggested Jones is being unfairly targeted. Despite the ongoing legal challenges, there’s no direct link between the latest charges and Jones’ decision to retire. Widely regarded as one of the greatest in MMA history, Jones holds many UFC records across different weight classes, including light heavyweight and heavyweight titles. Frustrations grew among fans due to uncertainty over his career path, with petitions leading to his stripping of the heavyweight title. Meanwhile, Dana White named interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinel as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champ following Jones’ retirement.

Fan Take: This development underscores the complicated legacy of Jon Jones—both as a phenomenal athlete and a figure surrounded by controversy. For fight fans, it highlights ongoing questions about the sport’s handling of stars with tumultuous personal lives and could influence the UFC’s policies on discipline and athlete management moving forward.
